Marvel’s Annihilators Movie: Is It REALLY Happening?

I’m not entirely convinced yet, but rumors suggest that Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios are planning to create a film based on “The Annihilators” for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The rumor comes via Daniel RPK.

Who are The Annihilators?

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the team I envision when creating The Annihilators – Earth’s most powerful champions in the comic books – includes Wendell Vaughn as Quasar, the fearsome Beta Ray Bill, the noble Gladiator, Richard Rider as Nova, the enigmatic Silver Surfer, and the formidable Ronan.

The team also features Cosmo and introduces Ikon, a Spaceknight.

Back in 2011, the stellar squad made their debut in “The Thanos Imperative: Devastation” and subsequently starred in a mini-series of their own.

They gathered towards the conclusion of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s exceptional tenure on Marvel Cosmic comics, which were discontinued following the approval for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy film by the MCU.

It wasn’t solely Gunn’s fault, but rather the decision made by those in charge at Marvel Comics when Feige approved Guardians of the Galaxy. They had previously shown little interest in the entire Marvel Cosmic line, only to later cancel it after they had done so. The story takes a turn for the worse, as Abnett and Lanning, along with the team who inspired the MCU’s multi-billion dollar franchise, were dismissed and Marvel Comics took over the project themselves.

Brian Bendis, who lacked expertise and struggled with cosmic storytelling even under pressure, assumed control over Guardians of the Galaxy. The comic was reintroduced with approximately 30 different cover versions, allowing then-Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso (often referred to as the “Obama” of comics) to highlight its popularity in interviews, giving the impression of continuity to casual readers. Bendis wrote the Guardians characters in a humorous manner to align with James Gunn’s lighthearted movie style.

The original character, Richard Rider, was initially replaced with a new character named Sam Alexander, who became known as “Nova in Name Only.” This change didn’t sit well with fans, and attempts by Mark Waid and Jeph Leob to make NINO appealing were unsuccessful. Eventually, they tried to reintroduce Richard Rider, but it seemed like a half-hearted effort to win over the fans. This story comes from the creator of Quantumania, who apparently didn’t have much success with this approach. How has that strategy worked out for them?

Previously, before Abnett assumed control of Marvel Cosmic, Marvel Comics decided to eliminate the character Quasar and introduce a new one: an alien, cloned, space-loving lesbian named Phyla-Vell. This character was later used by James Gunn in Guardians. It was around this time that our website, Cosmic Book News, was founded. Initially, we strongly disliked Phyla taking over the role of Quasar. We started a campaign to persuade Marvel to reintroduce Wendell Vaughn as Quasar and even sent them a famous Quasar-themed cake. Marvel appreciated our efforts and when Abnett, Lanning, and Editor Bill Rosemann took charge of Marvel Cosmic after Annihilation, they brought back Wendell Vaughn as Quasar and gave Phyla her own unique identity, Martyr.
