Lois Lane Knows Clark’s Secret in James Gunn’s Superman!

As a dedicated fan, I’ve always marveled at the intrigue surrounding Lois Lane not knowing Superman’s true identity since his debut in 1938’s Action Comics #1. This classic plot device has been a mainstay for many years. However, it seems that James Gunn’s latest rendition of Superman is veering away from this aspect of the lore entirely, or at least significantly reducing it. In the newly released trailer, Lois (portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan) interviews Clark (David Corenswet) in his everyday attire. What’s intriguing to us viewers is that Lois appears to be aware of Clark’s secret identity, suggesting a refreshing twist on this timeless tale.

The question remains: When exactly did she find out? Will Lois Lane discover Clark Kent’s secret at the beginning of the movie, or will it be revealed later on? It’s still uncertain, but based on the trailer, we can expect that by halfway through Superman, Lois will have uncovered his secret. There’s a possibility they may already be together in this film, although that’s not definitive. This development is refreshing since, in the comics, they’ve been married for almost 30 years, and perhaps it’s time for a new approach where Lois isn’t aware of his secret identity yet.

For more than five decades in the original DC Comics, Lois Lane was unsure if her timid colleague Clark Kent was actually Superman. She’d constantly try to uncover the truth, only to be left looking foolish as Superman always found a way to conceal it. This theme has been consistent across various adaptations such as the television series “The Adventures of Superman,” cartoons, and “Superman: The Movie.” In “Superman II,” Lois (played by Margot Kidder) did discover his secret, but Superman used his magical kissing abilities to make her forget by the film’s end. It wasn’t until 1991 that DC Comics officially revealed Clark’s identity to Lois in a lasting manner.

The significant event occurred in issue 662 of Action Comics from 1991. By 1996, the duo working for the Daily Planet were married and have since had children, as depicted in the CW series Superman & Lois. It’s worth noting that James Gunn’s Superman is a counterpoint to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, but one aspect that Snyder’s film got right was Amy Adams always knowing Clark was Superman from the beginning. So, acknowledgment where it’s due. We appreciate that this is something Gunn is maintaining. Lois Lane is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. Keeping her in the dark about Clark’s secret would make her appear dimwitted and Clark seem inconsiderate.

It’s clear that Clark will continue to hide his identity from those close to him, such as Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, and the rest of the Daily Planet staff. However, maintaining this secret from someone as intimate as Lois Lane gives off a distinct feeling. Comics and shows like Superman and Lois have demonstrated that their romantic relationship thrives when they are an open and honest power couple who share everything. James Gunn’s approach seems to be more contemporary and less traditional in this aspect, which we appreciate.
