Star Wars Characters Ranked by Midi-Chlorian Count: Who’s the Most Powerful?

As a dedicated Star Wars enthusiast, I’ve always marveled at the abundance of Jedi and Sith in the galaxy far, far away. Interestingly, some of the most formidable Force-wielders graced our screens during the epic Skywalker Saga, encompassing all nine mainline movies. But let’s not forget about the diverse cast of characters that populate other Star Wars media – both canon and non-canon. Remarkably, several of these individuals possessed such prodigious Force abilities that they could even rival the mightiest Force users from the Skywalker Saga!

To elaborate, Force users are often evaluated based on their midi-chlorian levels. These microscopic life forms reside within all living beings, facilitating the Force’s flow through them. Those with a higher midi-chlorian count tend to be more receptive to the Force compared to others, and this increased count indicates that an individual possesses greater potential for wielding powerful abilities as a Force user. Therefore, let us examine the Star Wars characters boasting the highest midi-chlorian counts.

20. Qui-Gon Jinn – 10,000

Although Qui-Gon Jinn held a high rank within the Jedi Order during his era, he wasn’t the strongest in terms of power. In fact, he was somewhat of an outlaw among the Jedi due to his unconventional beliefs and ideas that deviated from those commonly held by other Jedi. Yet, he remained as dedicated to the Jedi ways as any other member of the Order. However, his independent spirit often led him into conflicts with the Jedi Council.

In the belief of the Living Energy known as the Force, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn might have been the pioneer who discovered a method to converse with a fellow Force user beyond life, such as when he manifested as a Force spirit towards the end of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s story. His midi-chlorian count was approximately 10,000, making him a potent Force user, although not the strongest. Nevertheless, he was shrewd and skillful with the Force enough to perceive that Anakin could become the Chosen One.

19. Ahsoka Tano – Around 10,000

Originally hailing from a Togruta tribe that dwelled harmoniously with nature on their native planet, as depicted in Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, Ahsoka Tano stood out due to her exceptional Force abilities. In fact, she demonstrated this prowess by subduing a ferocious tiger-like creature from her homeland. This remarkable talent caught the eye of the Jedi, leading her to eventually study under them on Coruscant.

Following her promotion to Padawan, Ahsoka Tano was paired with Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker as her mentor. In this period, she adopted some of Anakin’s defiant traits, but she also mastered his prowess in lightsaber combat and Force abilities. Although she didn’t ultimately advance to the rank of Jedi Knight because she parted ways with the Order as a Padawan, Ahsoka later developed into a knowledgeable Force user who survived both the Empire’s ascension and decline, as well as the emergence of Luke Skywalker’s new Jedi Order.

18. Kit Fisto – 12,700

Known for his cheerful demeanor and high rank within the Jedi Order, Kit Fisto was among the most powerful members of the Jedi Council during the era of the Galactic Republic. His exceptional abilities were evident during the Clone Wars, where his Jedi prowess proved instrumental in shifting battles in favor of the Jedi and the Republic. After all, a Master’s title wouldn’t have been bestowed upon him if he wasn’t an accomplished Jedi.

In simple terms, Kit Fisto had a high midi-chlorian count, approximately 12,700, making him one of the more powerful Jedi within the Jedi Order compared to many others. Notably, aside from Mace Windu, he endured longest during the battle against Darth Sidious when several other Jedi Masters and himself attempted to apprehend him. This prolonged fight against one of the strongest Sith Lords in history serves as a testament to Kit Fisto’s considerable strength.

17. Plo Koon – 12,900

Plo Koon served on the Jedi High Council towards the end of the Galactic Republic’s existence, earning him the title of esteemed Jedi Master whom other Jedi admired deeply. Not only was he a council member, but he also held the rank of general during the Clone Wars. His exceptional abilities were particularly evident in his mastery of starfighter piloting, as even Anakin Skywalker, a notable figure himself, frequently praised his skills in this area.

Indeed, Plo Koon’s impressive midi-chlorian level was evident in his ability to harness the Force while flying, but he was more than just a skilled pilot – he was an accomplished Jedi Master who earned his place on the Council for his exceptional abilities. Regrettably, during the climax of Order 66, Plo Koon met his end when the clones under his command opened fire on him in mid-air, leaving him with no opportunity to retaliate.

16. Kylo Ren – 13,500

Born to Han Solo and Leia Organa (Skywalker), Ben Solo demonstrated an impressive ability in the Force, a talent that his uncle Luke Skywalker recognized from the start. This innate skill wasn’t surprising given that Skywalker’s lineage coursed through him, ensuring he would be a formidable Force user. Although not as naturally gifted as his uncle or mother, Ben Solo was still exceptionally powerful in the Force due to his heritage within the Skywalker family.

In the sequel trilogy, Ben Solo transformed into Kylo Ren, a powerful enforcer serving under Supreme Leader Snoke during the First Order era. Later on, he ascended to become Supreme Leader himself and collaborated with Emperor Palpatine. What’s more, as one of the rare Force users in the galaxy at that time, Kylo Ren forged an exceptionally potent bond with the Force.

15. Grogu – Around 14,000

In the hit Star Wars series on Disney+, The Mandalorian, Grogu stands as one of the two key characters. This show remains the most watched Star Wars production. Originally known among fans as Baby Yoda, Grogu exhibited his Force abilities at an early age, even though these powers were still quite undeveloped. Despite forgetting much of his Jedi Temple training on Coruscant, Grogu’s potential as a Force user became evident in his ability to lift extremely heavy objects and even control a Rancor with the power of the Force.

Without a doubt, it’s clear that members of Yoda’s species are exceptionally gifted with the Force, given their high midi-chlorian levels. This is why Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano recognized Grogu’s potential in the Force. If he had been trained as a Jedi, he would have become a formidable Force user.

14. Rey – 14,000

In the sequel trilogy, Rey emerges as the central figure and is a girl who possesses an innate affinity for the Force. Throughout the first two films of this series, viewers pondered over why Rey exhibited such strong abilities with the Force, even without undergoing Jedi training, and managing to compete with Kylo Ren. It wasn’t until the third movie that her true background was unveiled.

It turned out that Rey was actually the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine, who had secretly orchestrated events as Darth Sidious within the Galactic Empire. Her innate talents were a result of her Palpatine lineage, and she was fated to take over as a new galactic tyrant in his place. However, she chose to identify herself as a Skywalker because of her bond with Luke, Leia, and Kylo Ren. Ultimately, it was her inherent affinity for the Force that enabled her to ultimately vanquish Darth Sidious.

13. Darth Plagueis – 15,500

Have you ever come across the tale of the wise Sith Master, Darth Plagueis? Such a story is not one typically shared by Jedi, as Darth Plagueis was the Sovereign Sith who secretly tutored Darth Sidious in the early stages of the prequel series. Moreover, his exceptionally high midi-chlorian levels indicate just how potent he was.

Darth Plagueis, although not as formidable in combat compared to his apprentice, possessed an extraordinary wisdom that allowed him to manipulate midi-chlorians to create life. It’s commonly speculated that this manipulation of the midi-chlorians may have resulted in Anakin Skywalker’s creation, serving as a potential retribution from the Force for Plagueis and his apprentice’s interference with the natural order.

12. Darth Vader – 16,000

Indeed, Darth Vader, originally Anakin Skywalker, earns a notable spot on this list for his immense power and terror during his tenure as the enforcer of the Galactic Empire. After he succumbed to the dark side and was severely injured in his battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar, Vader transformed into the character we all know. Despite being touted as the strongest Force user in history, his powers were compromised due to his injuries.

As a diehard Star Wars fan, I can’t help but marvel at Darth Vader’s transformation. His cybernetic limbs made him an intimidating figure, no doubt, but they came at a cost – reduced mobility. Yet, despite this setback, he towered over any remaining Jedi (except for Obi-Wan and Yoda). His relentless pursuit of Jedi for years was marked by ruthlessness without mercy. And let’s not forget the awe-inspiring display of his Force power during Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, where he effortlessly outmatched Cal Kestis.

11. Count Dooku – 16,500

During the Clone Wars era, Count Dooku emerged as the head of the Separatists, but prior to this, he was a highly skilled Jedi Master who mentored Qui-Gon Jin. Over time, however, he grew disenchanted with the Republic and the Jedi Order. This disillusionment set in when Dooku perceived that various politicians and leaders across the galaxy were manipulating both the Jedi and the Republic for their own gain.

In summary, after the demise of Darth Maul, he departed from the Jedi Order and clandestinely transitioned into a Sith Lord under the tutelage of Darth Sidious. This training allowed him to master the dark side’s power, making him even more formidable. Notably, he was an exceptionally strong Jedi before his departure, due to his high midi-chlorian count, approximately 16,500. However, it was as a Sith Lord that he amassed the strength necessary to challenge Yoda during their confrontation.

10. Obi-Wan Kenobi – 17,000

Obi-Wan Kenobi was a highly esteemed and accomplished Jedi Master throughout the Star Wars saga. Not only did he mentor Anakin Skywalker, but he also fought courageously as one of the Republic’s frontline warriors during the Clone Wars. Although his fighting style was more defensive in nature, Obi-Wan had a high midi-chlorian count that enabled him to match the strength of formidable adversaries.

In that aspect, he employed his unique skills as a defensive expert to outmatch General Grievous, who possessed enough power to confront numerous Jedi simultaneously. Notably, Kenobi also prevailed against Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in several battles. This was achieved by using his abilities with the Force and adopting a defensive approach to counteract the aggressive tendencies of his former apprentice.

9. Darth Revan – 17,900

In simpler terms, Darth Revan isn’t officially recognized as a canon character in the Disney era of Star Wars because the events of the Old Republic are still under debate. However, fans who grew up with Star Wars appreciate his strong and badass persona. Moreover, his Force power, indicated by a high midi-chlorian count, is comparable to some of the most powerful characters in Star Wars lore, which explains why he is so formidable.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say that I’m one with Revan, a legendary character from the epic Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. You see, his tale as a Sith Lord is shrouded in antiquity, and not many in the era of the Skywalker Saga are familiar with his name. Yet, to the secret cultists of the Sith, Revan stands tall as one of the mightiest Sith Lords history has ever known. In the heart of Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, you could hear a chant by the cultists in Exegol that echoed his name, showcasing the reverence they hold for him.

8. Mace Windu – 18,000

Mace Windu was undoubtedly one of the most formidable duelists within the Jedi Order during the Clone Wars era. He possessed a unique skill – the ability to harness the power of the dark side without fully succumbing to it. This talent enabled him to create and perfect a lightsaber technique that let him utilize the rage of the dark side without experiencing its negative effects in battle. As a result, he demonstrated immense strength, even defeating some of Star Wars’ mightiest characters. In fact, he even managed to engage Darth Sidious in combat.

Mace Windu was exceptionally skilled with the Force, making him one of the most powerful Jedi Masters ever known. He had an extraordinary ability called the Shatterpoint, which allowed him to identify vulnerabilities in his adversaries and exploit them. This same skill enabled him to discern pivotal weak points not only in individuals but also in events. For instance, he understood that Dooku was a critical point of instability during the Clone Wars, and defeating him would help bring an end to the conflict.

7. Yoda – 19,000

In my book, no Star Wars saga would be whole without the legendary Jedi Master who fans consider the strongest and wisest ever – none other than Yoda himself! Throughout the Skywalker Saga, he held the title of Jedi Grandmaster, wielding an unmatched experience and wisdom that made him a formidable force, even in his advanced years and diminutive size.

Given his extraordinary lifespan of 900 years, Yoda bore witness to the tales of the High Republic era, and he trained countless powerful Jedi over the nine centuries he walked among us.

In essence, his experiences honed his abilities with the Force significantly. Furthermore, his species’ inherent aptitude and high midi-chlorian count played substantial roles in making him an exceptional Jedi Master, often regarded as one of the greatest in Star Wars history. Notably, his battle against Darth Sidious ended in a standstill, demonstrating his remarkable strength among the series’ characters.

6. Palpatine/Darth Sidious – 20,000

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but notice the enigmatic figure of Darth Sidious gracing this list. Known far and wide as one of the most formidable Sith Lords in history, Palpatine stands out among the ranks due to his uncanny ability to control people and think multiple moves ahead. In the epic Skywalker Saga, it was his knack for devising intricate plans within plans that truly set him apart.

Regardless of being more strategist than a direct combatant, Darth Sidious exhibits exceptional skills in using the Force, owing to his elevated midi-chlorian level. He is adept at Sith’s dark sorcery and poses significant threat with his Force Lightning. His ability to fully harness these powers against characters like Yoda, Rey, and Kylo Ren underscores the formidable might of Emperor Palpatine.

5. Starkiller –22,000

While Starkiller isn’t officially recognized as a canonical character, it’s challenging to exclude him from this list given his immense power showcased in Star Wars: Force Unleashed. As a child, Darth Vader stumbled upon Starkiller who, unbeknownst to Vader at the time, possessed the strength of a Jedi Master. This discovery led Vader to see potential in training Starkiller secretly with the ambition of eventually overthrowing the Emperor together.

In this context, Starkiller demonstrated an over-the-top display of his Force abilities in the game, where he had the strength to tear down an entire Star Destroyer from the sky and crush it on the ground. He was capable of filling a whole room with Force Lightning and using various other Force powers that enabled him to lift objects that were beyond the lifting capacity of most Star Wars characters. Furthermore, his ability to eliminate several non-canonical Star Wars Jedi Masters underscores his immense potential as a Force wielder.

4. Leia Organa – 23,000

In essence, Leia Organa didn’t have extensive training as a Jedi because she began her studies later in life and prioritized leadership roles instead. However, she possessed the same innate potential as Luke Skywalker – potential that earns her a place on this list. Interestingly, being Luke’s twin sister implies they share similar midi-chlorian counts, thus positioning Leia on par with him in terms of Force sensitivity.

Absolutely, the midi-chlorian level simply signifies a Jedi or Force user’s natural ability and latent potential. Despite Leia possessing one of the highest midi-chlorian counts ever recorded, her lack of extensive training and combat experience compared to Luke is what kept her from matching his strength. However, she was proficient enough to assume responsibility for Rey’s tutelage following Luke’s demise.

3. Luke Skywalker –23,0000

In essence, Luke Skywalker, the main character of Star Wars, demonstrated exceptional aptitude in the Force as the offspring of the Chosen One. This natural ability made him an agile learner, enabling him to rapidly develop into a powerful and proficient Force user within a short span of training years. Furthermore, the inability of even the most seasoned Jedi Masters to withstand Darth Vader for even a moment underscores Luke’s innate talent and rapid learning capabilities.

Indeed, since Luke and Leia were born as twins, it’s not surprising that they shared similar midi-chlorian counts. However, we attribute a greater role to Luke due to his superior combat skills compared to Leia. Moreover, he played a pivotal part in mentoring future Jedi, rebuilding the Order once the Empire had fallen.

2. Darth Vitiate – 25,000

Darth Vitiate’s canonical status is uncertain, but there’s no denying his popularity among Star Wars enthusiasts due to his immense power during the Sith Empire’s zenith. He was initially presented in the Star Wars: The Old Republic video game as a main antagonist. His reign as the Sith Emperor for over 1,400 years is evidence of his might.

In the annals of galactic history, it’s widely accepted that Vitiate is one of the most powerful Force users ever. His staggeringly high midi-chlorian count supports this claim. At a young age, and without any formal training, Vitiate demonstrated an impressive mastery of various Force abilities. When he discovered how to extract the life force from others, his power grew nearly unbounded.

1. Anakin Skywalker (Before Injury) – Around 27,000

In their attempts to manipulate midi-chlorians to create life, Darth Plagueis and Darth Sidious unwittingly brought forth Anakin Skywalker, who was considered the Chosen One. This extraordinary being was not naturally conceived, but rather born as a response from the Force, serving as its retribution against these Sith Lords for overstepping their boundaries.

Qui-Gon Jinn swiftly recognized Anakin’s exceptional natural ability when he tested his blood and discovered an exceptionally high midi-chlorian count. Remarkably, this number surpassed even Master Yoda’s own level.

Regarding this matter, Qui-Gon Jinn firmly believed Anakin Skywalker was destined, asserting his natural talents as a Force user which quickly propelled him up the ranks and surpassed many Jedi Masters in power. At his peak, he even dabbled in the dark side, leading Darth Sidious to acknowledge that Anakin would eventually outshine both him and Yoda. However, following his defeat at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi and injuries caused by overconfidence, Anakin’s power declined significantly, preventing him from achieving his full potential.
