THE WALKING DEAD: DEAD CITY’s Latest Death Gives Negan a Taste of His Own Ruthless Medicine

The second season of “The Walking Dead: Dead City” is underway, and it finds Negan, once a merciless leader of the Saviors, in a tricky predicament. He’s become more hesitant towards violence and yearns to return to his old life. Unfortunately for him, the Croat and Dama have him cornered, essentially keeping him captive and compelling him to mobilize the NYC forces to battle New Babylon. In episode two, it seemed as though Negan was beginning to revel in his celebrity among the Burazi. However, a mission to destroy a boat gives Negan a hint of what it feels like to experience his own brand of villainy.

In this episode, a Croat learns that a gang from the mainland is heading to Manhattan. New Babylon intends to seize control of the city and exploit its methane reserves for energy. In response, Negan concocts a scheme to ambush their ship. Interestingly, he collaborates with the Croat and Burazi to bring his plan to fruition. Before launching the attack, the Croat brags about Negan, sharing an anecdote about how he once deceived another group into believing the Saviors would submit to them.

Instead, they supplied meat to the group, leading to severe stomach issues before their demise. Negan smirks at this recollection and completes his tale. Yet, when they retaliate with explosives on the vessel, he appears to enjoy his dominance. However, this pleasure wanes when Herschel boards a boat. He refrains from further firing, offering them an opportunity to flee safely. The Croat observes this and informs Dama, who then asserts her command.

She ushers in Victor, the gifted violinist whom Negan had formed a connection with during his captivity. She makes him perform a tune and then asserts that neither of them should yearn for or pay tribute to the ancient customs of the world. Instead of mercy, she stabs Victor in the neck, causing Negan to scream in distress. To add insult to injury, she praises the Croat for his actions, which stirs up a great deal of tension between him and Negan in the days to come. Although the Croat appears to be on Negan’s side, it is clear that his allegiance lies with Dama, just as it once did when he was a Savior.

Witnessing Negan coldly watch someone he loved perish doesn’t hurt him as much as when he brutally took Glenn’s life in front of Maggie. However, it serves as a harsh reminder of the suffering and innocence he ended for his own gain. Unlike before, this imprisonment isn’t driven by a desire to uphold a higher moral code like Rick did. Personally, I feel that Rick should have executed him, but that’s just my opinion.

It seems that Dama and the Croat view him more as a manipulatable tool for their gain rather than a person with feelings and autonomy. This treatment might propel him to take decisive action against them, especially when he learns Maggie has returned to the island. In any case, Negan appears to be due whatever emotional turmoil life may bring his way.
