In many comic book worlds, it’s common for characters to have counterparts in different universes, and sometimes these roles get passed on to worthy successors over time. DC Comics’ Green Lanterns are selected based on their “will,” as determined by Power Rings or through the choice of a backup to the primary Green Lantern, who is chosen by the Guardians of the Universe. These characters typically belong to an interstellar police force known as the Green Lantern Corps. Here at Fiction Horizon, we’ve compiled a list ranking the 15 most powerful Green Lanterns in existence.
To kick things off, it’s important to note that there are over 50 Green Lanterns scattered across the DC Universe, each one possessing unique strengths. Some excel in physical combat, while others display exceptional mental prowess. This project, needless to say, presented quite a challenge, but we were more than eager to tackle it head-on. So, without any further delay, let’s dive right in!
15. Ch’p
Alright, let’s make sure to incorporate Ch’p, a remarkable character from the DC Universe who hails from H’lven and is known for his squirrel-like appearance. Initially, he was a member of the same Green Lantern training group as Hal Jordan and has dedicated his life to the Green Lantern Corps. This unique character played a crucial role in vanquishing formidable adversaries such as Doctor Ub’x, who had previously bested all other Green Lanterns, and when Maaldor, a dangerous criminal, posed a threat. Ch’p was also part of the Earth-based Green Lantern team that survived the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a catastrophic event affecting multiple universes which ultimately led to the destruction of numerous parallel realities.
In the universe of DC Comics, Ch’p played a significant role during the conquest of the Antimatter Realm and was instrumental in apprehending Goldface and Lurlan Dupo. His power is such that he once managed to subdue Superman! However, in the storyline, Ch’p met his demise but was subsequently resurrected on Oa as a Black Lantern. Tragically, he was then slain by Guy Gardner, another Green Lantern.
14. Alan Scott

In contrast to other Green Lanterns, Alan Scott, the original one, possesses unique abilities. For a significant portion of his career, Alan Scott was disconnected from the Green Lantern Corps. His powers stem from the entity imprisoned by the Guardians of the Universe, called Starheart, who saved him on Earth. He wore this entity as a ring, which granted him his power and led him to adopt the name Green Lantern.
Apart from his regular Green Lantern abilities, he additionally powers his ring, an unusual feat. His power set includes the standard Green Lantern capabilities, yet there’s a unique vulnerability – he is susceptible to weapons made of wood. He is not only a father figure to Jade, another Green Lantern, but also her twin brother Obsidian. Moreover, he passed his original ring onto Kyle Ryner, another Green Lantern.
13. Rot Lop Fan

Rot Lop Fan is an extraterrestrial being made of silicon, hailing from the pitch-black expanse known as Obsidian Deeps, devoid of light. Despite having no eyes, he maintains a friendship with fellow Green Lantern, Guy Gardner. What sets him apart is his blindness, which necessitates a more user-friendly power ring equipped with a handbell for his unique needs. He employs this ring to safeguard his people.
Since he’s blind, Rot Lop Fan possesses exceptional hearing abilities and can catch even the slightest of sounds. Moreover, this character has a distinct pledge to his name. Initially, Rot Lop Fan was not initially recognized as part of the Green Lantern Corps due to his lack of knowledge about their existence; however, following the reformation of The Corps, this changed. In fact, you can spot him in the live-action Green Lantern film.
12. Hannu

Originally from Ovacrom Six, Hannu belongs to the Green Lantern Corps. You could say he’s quite formidable, both in brawls and as a relentless force – his imposing figure is downright intimidating. Given that on his home planet, warriors were taught to shun weapons in combat, seeing them as a sign of weakness, it’s no surprise that Hannu prefers to use his raw strength in close-quarters combat, opting for punches and charges instead of relying on his ring.
Absolutely, that doesn’t imply he never employs his Power Ring; rather, by merging his inherent power with the Power Ring, he becomes one of the most potent Green Lanterns within the DC universe.
11. Simon Baz

This recently introduced Green Lantern made his first appearance in DC Comics during the New 52 relaunch in 2012. He works alongside Jessica Cruz as a duo of Green Lanterns. Unlike traditional Green Lanterns, he boasts unique abilities that set him apart. Some of these extraordinary powers include traversing space and time, phasing through solid objects, seeing in the emerald spectrum, enhancing his willpower, scanning electromagnetic waves, bringing people back from the dead, and much more.
In a different context, we could say: He played a role in the Emergence of the Third Army, contributing to their suppression. Unlike the stereotypical superhero, his upbringing in Michigan’s harsh environment kept him teetering on the edge of good and evil, even causing the Justice League to question his allegiance. However, he ultimately won over everyone with his noble intentions. He is also exceptionally adept at handling firearms.
10. Jessica Cruz

Jessica Cruz is among the latest group of Green Lantern recruits, joining Simon Baz. Her background story stands out as particularly intriguing. On a hunting trip with companions, Jessica and her friends unexpectedly came across mobsters in the process of burying a body. They witnessed the scene and engaged in a shootout, managing to kill all but one of the mobsters. Traumatized by this encounter, Jessica was later sought out by The Ring of Volthoom, a malevolent artifact that thrives on fear and ultimately destroys its hosts from within. Unlike other Lanterns, Jessica did not voluntarily take possession of the ring; instead, she was compelled to accept it, making her unique in the Green Lantern Corps.
In this storyline, The Ring inflicts immense pain on Jessica, both physically and emotionally, and intends to harness her abilities to annihilate the main Earth. Fortunately, the Justice League steps in, with Batman taking the lead, helping Jessica confront her fears and ultimately conquer The Ring’s powers. In the realm of comics, Jessica Cruz’s Power Ring merges with Voolthom’s Travel Ring, granting her the unique power to travel through time. As a novice, Jessica is still undergoing training from Hal Jordan and other Green Lanterns, preparing for her future challenges.
9. Jade

Alan Scott’s daughter, Jade, also known as Obsidian’s sister, possesses a significant amount of power. She obtained her father’s Starheart abilities while he was under its influence and inherited her mother’s ability to control plants. Unlike her father, who requires the Starheart power ring to use its powers, Jade doesn’t need one – her power is channelled through a star-shaped mark on her palm.
As a dedicated movie reviewer, I find myself captivated by this character who possesses extraordinary abilities due to her Starheart powers. These unique talents enable her to intuitively locate her twin brother and father across the vast expanse of the universe. With the prestigious Power Ring bestowed upon her by the Green Lantern Corps, her skills mirror her own, but the ring demands a 24-hour recharge from her personal power battery. The ring carries a subtle yellow impurity that she must conquer in order to harness its full potential. Lastly, it’s worth noting that this character is an integral part of an esteemed group known as the Justice League of America, standing alongside a formidable Green Lantern.
8. Mogo

Mogo stands out as a unique entity, as it’s actually a planet. It’s a member of the Green Lantern Corps, a group tasked with safeguarding all the universes. While its power might seem underestimated at first glance, it holds immense significance – Mogo is responsible for choosing all potential Green Lantern recruits across all realms. This alone makes it incredibly powerful. When combined with the Green Power Ring, Mogo’s strength becomes even more apparent.
Mogo may not be a frequent character in the comics due to fewer stories featuring it, but when it does appear in major storylines, it always plays a pivotal role.
On this intelligent planet, a significant sacrifice was made, playing a crucial role in overcoming the Black Lanterns, which were deceased Green Lanterns such as Jade, Ch’p, and others resurrected. To vanquish them, Mogo ingested every Black Lantern into its core. The scorching magma within them turned the Black Lanterns to ashes for eternity, ensuring they couldn’t regenerate. Truly, if that isn’t impressive power, I can’t imagine what is.
7. Sodam Yat

Initially, it’s important to note that Sodam Yat is not of human origin; instead, he hails from the planet Daxam. Remarkably, Daxamites possess abilities and traits similar to Kryptonians, granting them immense natural power. Beyond his raw strength, Sodam Yat’s backstory is captivating. The Daxamites are a race known for their xenophobia, showing disdain towards alien beings and often being hostile to extraterrestrial visitors. This prejudice was challenged within Sodam Yat when he befriended an individual from another planet and different species. Despite his parents’ attempts to dissuade him, witnessing the cruelty inflicted upon his friend by his own people only served to strengthen his resolve to embrace the mysteries of the cosmos.
Apart from possessing abilities as a potent entity with Power Ring capabilities, he additionally formed a link with Ion, an entity dwelling within the Green Lantern Battery. Few Green Lanterns have achieved this bonding, making Sodam Yat uniquely remarkable among them.
6. Kilowog

Mentor Carter, belonging to the Green Lantern Corps, primarily focuses on molding fresh recruits. Kilowog, however, isn’t just a standard trainer; he is a prodigious genetic scientist hailing from the planet Bolovax Vik. He is one of the most formidable beings among his kind, boasting superhuman strength, resilience, and an exceptionally sharp mind. In his training regimen, Kilowog imparts knowledge on how to effectively wield their Power Rings and manage them skillfully.
Beyond this, he serves as the initial mentor for the young recruit, Hal Jordan. Later on, Hal assists him in identifying the murderer of Abin Sur, a former Green Lantern. Notably, being a member of the Green Lantern Corps implies that he possesses his unique Power Ring. As Hal Jordan points out, his ring is the only one to emit a sound during use. Additionally, Kilowog’s Power Ring boasts an impressive level of determination, capable of achieving any goal desired by its wielder.
5. Guy Gardner

One much-adored character, Guy Gardner, is an exceptional Green Lantern. His backstory has undergone some alterations, but ultimately, DC chose to adhere to his original tale of being physically abused by his father in Baltimore during his childhood. Many fans find his story captivating. When Hal Jordan discovered the Ring belonging to the fallen Green Lantern Abin Sur, who had crashed and perished on Earth, it was Guy Gardner who was also nearby. However, Jordan was closer and he became the Green Lantern. Nevertheless, Guy served as a backup for Jordan in the Green Lantern Corps. These two eventually formed a close friendship.
Guy played a key role in numerous comic book events and significant battles alongside the Green Lantern Corps. His alliances extend beyond the Justice League to include groups like the Darkstars, cementing his status as one of the most significant Green Lanterns in history. He possesses the standard powers of a Power Ring but with the Qwardian power ring he received from Sinestro, his strength grew even greater. Due to his immense willpower, his ring perpetually radiates light. Moreover, being half-Vuldarian, Guy can transform weapons from his own body.
4. John Stewart

John Stewart, a seasoned U.S. Marine Corps veteran and an expert in weaponry, is one of the strongest Green Lanterns. The Guardians of the Universe chose him as a stand-in for Hal Jordan when Guy Gardner was severely wounded. Initially, Hal resisted this decision due to Stewart’s tendency to challenge authority figures. However, he was eventually accepted. John Stewart’s tenure as a Green Lantern has been marked by numerous challenges, but he has consistently been involved in major comic book storylines.
In the game, John Stewart, a remarkable character, serves as an exceptional “creator” or builder. His abilities encompass a level of semi-invincibility and the capacity to generate solid-light structures that often resemble military hardware – a trait shared by many Green Lanterns. Given his former profession as an architect, this unique blend of skills makes him one of the most exceptional members of the Green Lantern Corps. His ring’s powers are essentially boundless, limited only by his willpower and creativity. Moreover, he is widely regarded, even by Hal Jordan, as the finest flier within the Corps. While we could delve deeply into his abilities, let’s save that for another time.
3. Dawnbreaker

Are you curious about the idea of Bruce Wayne becoming Green Lantern? Take a look at Dawnbreaker. In this alternate universe (Earth-32), Bruce Wayne is an incredible Green Lantern, yet he lacks empathy and mercy – a stark contrast to the regular Batman. This version of Bruce exists in the Dark Multiverse where every reality is fated to perish. The narrative follows a similar path as the original Batman’s story: his parents are killed by a robber, but this time, he gains a Power Ring and superpowers instead.
In a different rendition: Instead of seeking justice, Bruce seeks vengeance against the mugger who attacked him. However, the Ring, being bound by Green Lantern’s ethical code, forbids taking a life. Yet, the desire for revenge overpowers the Ring and it becomes corrupted. In this state, Bruce ends up killing the mugger. Now, he decides to protect Gotham City, but with a ruthless approach – executing criminals without mercy. This new Green Lantern version is marked by a lack of compassion even towards allies like Jim Gordon. The Green Lantern Corps and Guardians of the Universe find his actions unacceptable and decide to apprehend him. However, Bruce has upgraded his Power Battery and amasses extraordinary power. He then eliminates every member of the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians of the Universe, leading to an unprecedented crisis.
Here’s another way to phrase it: Instead of Green Lantern, he grows weary and transforms into an invincible Batman: The Dawnbreaker. He merges his darkness with green energy, ready to strike when the world teeters on the brink of nothingness. This chilling comic book tale serves as a warning not to underestimate Bruce Wayne… and offers gratitude for the presence of Alfred.
2. Kyle Rayner

Initially, Kyle Rayner wasn’t widely popular among readers due to his strong resemblance to his creator. This is evident if you delve into Kyle’s origins – he’s a comic book artist from North Hollywood. However, over time, Kyle grew in esteem among Green Lantern fans. He became a Green Lantern following the devastation caused by Hal Jordan when he nearly wiped out the entire Green Lantern Corps due to grief. A surviving Guardian discovered Rayner and bestowed upon him the last functional Power Ring, thereby making him a Green Lantern.
His constructs are distinctive due to his vibrant creativity, nurtured by a childhood affection for Superman and Batman. This creative energy found expression in various forms, such as Batman, Superman, characters from anime, mystical creatures, and many more. It’s not just his nerdiness at play here; he is, apart from Somat Yat, the only one who formed a connection with the deity Ion. After Oblivion was vanquished, he momentarily attained godhood from Ion. The bond between Ion and Kyle, along with his imagination, allows him to alter realities. There’s much more to explore in future discussions.
1. Hal Jordan

Among all Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan is undeniably the most powerful and influential character. In the comic book world, he embodies every trait of a hero: he faced death, achieved deification, suffered temporary madness, saved the cosmos, forged his own ring, and vanquished formidable adversaries. His indomitable willpower places him among the most powerful beings in the universe.
During a tragic event that obliterated his native Coast City, Hal Jordan transformed into Parallax. In this form, he wreaked havoc, even killing members of the Green Lantern Corps, including close friends like Kilowog. Known as the strongest character in the DC Universe, Parallax possessed the ability to control time and space at will, as well as alter reality on a massive scale. His strength was so immense that he could knock out Superman with a single punch. However, he remained undefeated only when his consciousness regained control; once his willpower triumphed, he finally ceased his rampage. Apart from being the mightiest Green Lantern, Parallax is also one of the most beloved DC characters. We eagerly anticipate seeing him in an upcoming live-action movie. (The 2011 film does not factor into our expectations.)
