Approaching swiftly is the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, revealing the names of its esteemed jury members for this year. Renowned for championing diversity, whether in the films it showcases or the individuals who decide the recipient of the coveted Palme d’Or award.
The 78th film festival jury will be chaired by Halle Berry, Payal Kapadia, Alba Rohrwacher, Leila Slimani, Dieudo Hamadi, Hong Sangsoo, Carlos Reygadas, and Jeremy Strong among others.
Besides the Palme d’Or, the jury is tasked with selecting films for the Grand Prix, Best Actor and Actress, Best Director, and the Jury Prize. Additionally, the esteemed judging panel will include the Jury President, Juliette Binoche.
Previous Year, the jury was led by the director of Barbie, Greta Gerwig, who bestowed the Palme d’Or upon Sean Baker’s Anora. This movie, featuring Mikey Madison, also triumphed at this year’s Oscars, securing the Best Film award, and Madison herself was recognized with the Best Actress honor.
For the jury at Cannes, Halle Berry is a renowned actress who has excelled in critically acclaimed films like Monster’s Ball, Jungle Fever, and the X-Men franchise. This esteemed actress was the first African American to win an Oscar for her role under Marc Foster’s direction.
Accompanying her will be Payal Kapadia, a director famed for creating All We Imagined as Light, a movie that clinched the Grand Prix at the film festival last year and dominated during award season. Notably, Hong Sangsoo, a prolific Korean filmmaker, frequently attends both Cannes and the Berlinale film festivals.
Another talented actor, known for his powerful performance in The Apprentice, has been recognized with BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Oscar nominations. He will join the esteemed jury along with directors Reygadas, Dieudo Hamadi (a documentarist and producer), and Leïla Slimani (a French-Moroccan writer).
