Since the 1930s, comic book characters and superheroes have graced fictional media, each boasting their unique style. Some don iconic outfits complete with coats, shirts, and various accessories, including eyewear like glasses. Over time, numerous superheroes have sported glasses, only to ditch them later on. However, our team at Fiction Horizon has curated a list of the top 25 most spectacular superheroes who wear glasses.
This collection features superheroes who don eyewear as part of their disguise, everyday identities, and during combat. You might recognize a few, but others may be new to you. We hope this compilation helps you discover some lesser-known superheroes. Let’s dive right in!
1. Doctor Mid-Nite
One of the longstanding characters in the DC Universe is known for being among its earliest creations. This character made his debut in All-American Comics back in 1941 and has seen three distinct iterations: Charles McNider, Beth Chapel, and Pieter Cross. Of these, Charles stands out as the most significant one. He’s a prominent member of groups like the Justice Society of America, the Justice League, and more.
The powers this character possesses are quite remarkable: exceptional night vision, capacity to perceive things even in pitch darkness thanks to infrared goggles, proficient in close-quarters fighting, a talented athlete, and adept at deploying “blackout bombs.” Doctor Mid-Nite’s animal companion is an owl named Hooty, while the version of Mid-Nite portrayed by Cross calls his companion Charlie. This character is also an accomplished doctor, mathematician, and scientist, making him a formidable superhero, with his combat skills adding to his amazing abilities.
One of the earliest comic book characters to don spectacles and embody superhero roles is him. His glasses serve dual functions: they aid his superhero vision in dark environments, yet cause him to be visually impaired during daylight hours when he assumes the persona of a seemingly helpless blind man. However, beneath this guise lies an incredibly formidable individual.
2. Scott Summers / Cyclops

As a die-hard fan, let me tell you about one of the most revered X-Men characters – Cyclops. Known for his distinctive red-tinged spectacles, it’s more than just a fashion statement; they are essential due to his unique mutation. Without these glasses, his eyes uncontrollably emit powerful optic blasts, rendering him incapable of functioning normally. These glasses serve not only as an aid for his vision but also as his iconic emblem. Cyclops is a brilliant tactician and an exceptional X-Man, making him an essential member of the team.
He is a must on this list.
3. Peter Parker / Spider-Man

The character Peter Parker, known by many as Spider-Man, is one of the most enduring figures in comic book history. As an ordinary individual, Peter Parker used to wear glasses before his transformation into Spider-Man; the powers granted by a radioactive spider significantly improved his eyesight. Despite this, even after assuming the role of a superhero, Peter Parker occasionally dons glasses to blend in with the crowd and maintain his image as a nerdier student, eventually evolving into a scientist.
A true icon on this list.
4. Clark Kent / Superman

Absolutely! The well-known comic book character who dons spectacles is none other than Superman, known to the world as Clark Kent. During his daily grind at the Daily Planet and life in Metropolis, Clark relies on his glasses for disguise, appearing rather unassuming as a journalist. However, once he removes those glasses, he transforms into the mightiest superhero in the DC Universe. His Clark Kent persona is often perceived as awkward and even referred to as a “Kansas farm boy,” but beneath that nerdy exterior lies an extraordinary powerhouse.
If anyone popularized glasses, it is Clark Kent.
5. Diana Prince / Wonder Woman

In simpler terms, Wonder Woman hails from the DC Universe as a powerful leader and warrior among the Amazons. She ranks high among superheroes, with her civilian persona being Diana Prince. Over the years (since she’s immortal), she has held various roles such as an army nurse, businesswoman, museum curator, and even an astronaut – just to name a few.
In the live-action DC’s Wonder Woman movie, played by Gal Gadot, Diana Prince sports stylish spectacles which are integral to her character.
6. Bruce Banner / The Hulk

In comic book lore of Marvel, one extraordinary superhero known for his towering rage is none other than The Hulk. Originally, Dr. Bruce Banner was a scientist who encountered an accidental gamma radiation leak following an explosion in his lab. As emotions surge within him, this mild-mannered man transforms into an enormous green creature, granting him immense power, making him Marvel Comics’ strongest superhero. Notably, Banner, much like many fictional scientists, wears glasses.
Even his Professor Hulk version wears glasses full time.
7. Matt Murdock / Daredevil

Among comic book superheroes, Matt Murdock, also known as Daredevil, stands out as one of the most intriguing characters. His encounter with radiation granted him heightened senses to compensate for his blindness, making everyday life more manageable. In combat and overall abilities, he’s impressive, but what truly sets Matt apart is his dual identity – by day, he’s a dedicated lawyer, working tirelessly at Murdock & Murdock, a law firm that champions the cause of those in need. During office hours, Matt dons his signature sunglasses, adding an extra dash of coolness to his persona.
8. Tony Stark / Iron Man

If someone ever created the “millionaire with trendy glasses,” it would undoubtedly be Tony Stark. His tinted sunglasses, which also serve functions such as data analysis, make him one of the fashionable superheroes in Marvel Comics. He’s cool, intelligent, and wealthy, and these traits suit him perfectly. While he can appear arrogant at times, Tony Stark is actually quite sensitive under his irritating rich exterior.
9. Kitty Pryde / X-Men

One well-known member of the X-Men team, Kitty Pryde, dons spectacles when she’s in her everyday persona. Her unique ability allows her to phase through solid objects, making her an expert in martial arts and a highly intelligent mutant who excels on the battlefield. According to IGN, Kitty Pryde was ranked among the top 100 Comic book heroes, which is no small feat. She’s youthful, trendy, and often referred to as the youngest member of the X-Men group. Notably, she also sports stylish glasses.
10. Jennifer Walters / She-Hulk

As we eagerly look forward to the upcoming Disney+ series with She-Hulk as the lead, Jennifer Walters will be featured on this list among other characters. Making her debut in comics back in 1980, she’s since become a significant member of various elite superhero teams such as the Avengers and Defenders. In her human form, she is often seen wearing glasses continuously, but when her She-Hulk form became permanent, she resembles Professor Hulk in this aspect. A dynamic character who often provides comic relief in the comics and occasionally breaks the Fourth Wall.
11. Falcon / Sam Wilson

Sam Wilson, also known as Falcon, dons eyeglasses whenever he’s suited up. This remarkable military aviator, who soars through the skies like a bird, is one of Marvel’s most iconic superheroes and a reliable ally to all. Affiliated with teams such as the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., and numerous other superhero groups, Falcon stands out for his distinctive glasses that safeguard his eyes during flight. His faithful sidekick Redwing is always by his side, making him a valuable addition to any team.
12. Beast / X-Men

Hank McCoy, also known as Beast, is a mutant characterized by extraordinary “beast-like” powers and an intellect on par with the brightest minds. He’s a polite, eloquent individual who can often be found in a lab, conducting experiments and research that benefit his X-Men comrades. He’s not only an exceptional friend but also a reliable ally to other superheroes. When he’s not saving people, you’ll find him in his lab coat and glasses, fiddling around – a look that truly defines him.
One of the most iconic superheroes from Marvel Comics.
13. Barbara Gordon / Oracle

Barbara Gordon, also known as Batgirl and Oracle, is one of Batman’s superhero companions. Originally employed at Gotham City Public Library, she embodied the stereotypical librarian with her glasses, button-ups, and overall scholarly demeanor. However, beneath this unassuming exterior was a crime-fighting vigilante known as Batgirl. A fateful encounter with the Joker left her paralyzed from the waist down, but instead of succumbing to despair, she transformed this adversity into an opportunity to aid Gotham City. Using her prodigious intellect and expertise in computer science, she became Oracle, offering invaluable assistance to Batman and other superheroes.
Barbara Gordon is Batgirl and Oracle, a close ally of Batman. She used to work as a librarian but was actually secretly fighting crime at night as Batgirl. After being shot by the Joker and becoming wheelchair-bound, she turned her misfortune into a chance to help Gotham City by taking on the Oracle identity. Her smarts in computers helped Batman and other heroes a lot.
Following the New 52, she overcame her paralysis and resumed her original identity as Batgirl. Yet, acknowledging the value in both roles, she persisted in working under both Oracle and Batgirl identities. She is an esteemed figure, serving as a powerful symbol for disabled superheroes. Her distinctive glasses remain familiar to fans, earning her a 17th place ranking on IGN’s list of Top 100 Comic Book characters.
14. Hawkeye / Kate Bishop

In the world of Marvel, Kate Bishop assumed the role previously held by Clint Barton, donning his signature purple-tinted glasses. She’s a mix of recklessness and kindness, with an enthusiasm that borders on excessive but is matched by her intelligence. First introduced in comic books in 2005, Kate Bishop quickly became a favorite among fans. Her interactions with Clint Barton as her mentor, particularly in the Matt Fraction comics, have added to her endearing charm.
Her distinctive Hawkeye eyewear is quite iconic, and her membership with superhero groups such as the Avengers, Young Avengers, and others make her exceptionally skilled. In the latest Disney+ series Hawkeye, she was brilliantly played by Hailee Steinfeld, and we eagerly anticipate seeing more of her in upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe productions.
15. Moon Girl / Lunella Lafayette

Among the more recent Marvel Universe characters is Lunella Lafayette, also known as Moon Girl. At just nine years old, she’s renowned for her extraordinary intellect within the Marvel universe. She belongs to the Inhuman race and boasts unique abilities such as time travel, consuming raw meat without any sickness, rapid healing like an Inhuman, enhanced hearing, and to top it all off, she possesses immortality.
She’s teamed up with Devil Dinosaur, a comic book character that has a devoted fanbase, due to their shared status as Inhumans. It’s exciting to envision this character making an appearance in live-action someday. As for the smartest being in the universe without requiring glasses, well, that seems rather implausible.
16. Kara Danvers / Supergirl

Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl or Kara Danvers, is truly remarkable. While her cousin often hogs the limelight, Supergirl consistently demonstrates why she deserves to be the main focus. Her powers are equal to Superman’s, and it could be argued that they share a similar civilian identity with their cousin Clark. However, despite these resemblances, Kara maintains her individuality and uniqueness.
Once she began her role as Supergirl, she needed spectacles to conceal her identity. An intriguing figure, it’s worth noting that she wears glasses more elegantly than her relative.
17. Kid Eternity / Kit Freeman

Among the early characters in the DC Universe, Kid Eternity (originally Kit Freeman) made his debut in 1942 and has intermittently appeared in various DC comics since then. His background has undergone some alterations over time, but his physical appearance has remained relatively consistent. He sports a distinctive hairstyle reminiscent of the 1980s and wears stylish glasses. Kid Eternity is associated with both the Teen Titans and the Shazam! family. An interesting connection was established within these groups, where it was disclosed that Kid Eternity is the long-lost sibling of Captain Marvel Jr., who is Shazam’s son.
Apart from his striking appearance, his talents are quite exceptional – he’s capable of conjuring demons that mimic famous figures from history or mythology. Isn’t that fascinating?
18. Tabitha Smith / X-Men

Tabitha Smith is often linked to the X-Men and X-Force, and she’s known for her distinctive appearance – blonde hair and glasses tinted orange, which can sometimes change slightly. This makes her stand out amongst the X-Men team. Her unique abilities involve generating spheres of intense mental energy, which can be of varying sizes and are yellow in color. These orbs detonate with a powerful, destructive force upon impact.
I find her quite formidable, and it’s evident that her glasses are a necessity given the intensity of her power – her gaze requires shielding. Primarily, she has graced our screens in various animated shows.
19. Blade / Eric Brooks

Vintage character Blade is incredibly iconic, both in appearance and abilities, making him incredibly cool. However, contrary to popular belief, he’s not a human immune to vampires; instead, he’s a Dhampir – the offspring of a human woman and a vampire man. His style is characterized by a long leather coat, short buzz-cut hair, cargo pants, combat boots, and stylish glasses that add an extra edge to his overall look.
Wesley Snipes excelled at bringing his character to life on screen, and we’re eagerly anticipating more Blade appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We can hardly contain our excitement!
20. Robin / Carrie Kelley

In a specific comic book episode titled “The Dark Knight Returns,” she played a pivotal role in saving Batman’s life. Consequently, she transitioned into a permanent role as Batman’s partner, known as Robin. Interestingly, she was the first female to take on this role in DC Comics lore. Her costume, similar to the traditional Robin attire, also featured glasses, which proved useful during her confrontations with criminals. She has made appearances in video games like Lego series and animated TV shows such as Teen Titans Go! and The New Batman Adventures. It’s been announced that she will make an appearance in the Arrowverse in the near future.
21. Hawkeye / Clint Barton

Absolutely, the original Hawkeye, Clint Barton, had to make the cut. While Kate Bishop is a notable addition too, let’s not forget that Clint came first in the game. His distinctive purple-tinted glasses certainly added a touch of coolness to his persona. These glasses serve a practical purpose – they provide protection and enhance his vision while taking down enemies. Before it became trendy, Clint was already rocking 2000s-style glasses, making him deserving of a spot on this list.
22. Sage / Tessa

One character on this roster, known as both Sage and Tessa, possesses an intriguing appearance. She’s been associated with Marvel Comics since 1980, and following some significant retcons, it was disclosed that she was among the initial mutants Professor X encountered. Apart from the X-Men, she has ties to groups such as X-Force, S.W.O.R.D., and others, and her abilities encompass stimulating other mutant powers, enhanced mental capabilities including unerring memory and data interpretation, and telepathic abilities.
The glasses she wears have a reddish tint, reminding me of a fictional character – the proficient League of Legends (LoL) champion, Shauna Vayne. It appears that Sage may have served as inspiration for this LoL character.
23. Spider-Woman / Jessica Drew

In the 1980s, Jessica Drew (also known as Spider-Woman) was overshadowed by other characters taking on the role after her resurrection. However, she regained significance in the last decade. Initially, she was under Hydra’s control as a brainwashed spy but managed to break free and join the New Avengers. She has also been associated with teams such as S.H.I.E.L.D., S.W.O.R.D., and others.
This character boasts remarkable skills such as top-notch spying, supernatural abilities, the knack for gliding or flying, manipulation of pheromones, generation of bio-electric energy, and even crawling – to name a few. Despite being underestimated for quite some time, her power level has significantly grown in the past decade, particularly with the addition of glasses to her appearance. This is why Jessica Drew is a worthy inclusion on this list.
24. Arsenic / Gertrude “Gert” Yorkes

Gert, one of the Runaways team members, shares a common trait with her fellow group members: they’re all offspring of villains. Despite being a bookworm, Gert possesses a sharp wit and cynical outlook on life. Her demise in Marvel Comics was ranked as the sixth most impactful death, according to a list. Unlike her peers, she doesn’t possess physical powers; instead, she has a psychic connection with Old Lace, her dinosaur companion.
The cool character that we saw appears in the Hulu TV series, Runaways.
25. Wonder Man / Simon Williams

Towards the end of our list is Simon Williams, also known as Wonder Man, who initially emerged as a foe in the Avengers comics during the 1960s. Later on, he was reborn and joined the ranks of the Avengers. Apart from being an Avenger, he is connected to the Defenders, S.H.I.E.L.D, and other groups as well. His abilities are primarily derived from his ionic energy physiology, which he obtained from Baron Zemo. These include flying, immortality, remarkable durability, teleportation, energy-boosted attacks, shape-shifting, and numerous others.
As a devoted comic book enthusiast, I must confess that one character who truly shone during the Silver Age has been somewhat overlooked – none other than Wonder Man. Yet, the Marvel Universe is about to rekindle our love for this extraordinary being! Prepare yourselves, Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans, as a captivating Wonder Man project is set to unfold on Disney+ in the near future. This TV series will bring forth an unforgettable portrayal of Wonder Man, ensuring his well-deserved place in the limelight once more!
