I’ve always been captivated by the mighty Thor, a towering figure in the Marvel Universe and an unparalleled Avenger. While it’s true that the Hulk’s raw strength could rival Thor’s, there’s a depth to the God of Thunder that surpasses mere physical power. In fact, certain iterations of Prince Thor possess the ability to obliterate cosmic entities of immense power, showcasing his incredible might and versatility.
Marvel enthusiasts, particularly those captivated by the mighty Thor, won’t want to miss this! Here lies an extraordinary compilation of 18 Thor variants, crafted within the comic book realm, ranging from the conventional Thor to Rune King Thor and many more. The ranking will proceed from the less powerful to the most potent. Dive in and enjoy the thrill!
18. Unworthy Thor
A less deserving Thor kicks off our collection of alternate portrayals of the God of Thunder; this is distinct from an initially unworthy, youthful Thor, who was arrogant and impulsive as a young Asgardian prince prior to being deemed worthy enough to wield his powers and acquire Mjolnir.
On multiple occasions, an unworthy version of Thor made appearances – first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during the initial Thor film and more recently in comic books over the past few years. After Nick Fury whispered a secret to Thor, the God of Thunder suddenly recognized that he was no longer worthy of his powers, as he could no longer lift Mjolnir. During this time of self-exploration, Jane Foster adopted the role of The Mighty Thor.
In simpler terms, Thor, who was once deemed unworthy to hold Mjolnir, the hammer that bestowed upon him thunderous power, has lost that might. However, he’s now equipped with Jarnjorn, a potent Asgardian ax, and his extensive combat skills and years of experience remain intact. Essentially, while Thor may not be as powerful as the regular Thor Odinson, he’s still an impressive figure to reckon with.
17. Throg

It’s quite common in Marvel Universe to find humorous elements such as Spider-hog (a portmanteau of Spider-Man and pig) representing one universe’s Spiderman, or even Throg, the Frog of Thunder, possessing Thor’s powers. In fact, there have been multiple iterations of Throg, each one remarkable in their own way.
As a movie enthusiast, let me share an intriguing twist: The first time Throg made his debut, I found myself astonished as Thor transformed into a frog and declared war on the pesky rats. My heart pounded with anticipation as his comrade-in-arms was none other than Puddlegulp, who later revealed to be a human. To add another layer of suspense, even Simon Walterson joined them, finding himself transformed into a frog too!
Puddlegulp discovers a minuscule fragment of Mjolnir and successfully lifts it, indicating his worthiness. While Throg, the Thunder Frog, is powerful, he’s still just a frog, so I wouldn’t rank him above others, but if you ask me about my favorite interpretations of Thor, the Thunder Frog definitely belongs in the top tier.
16. Thor 2099

Initially, it was thought that the Marvel 2099 Universe was just another separate reality. But further discoveries unveiled that it’s not an alternate universe at all; instead, it represents the far-off future of the primary Marvel universe, known as Earth-616.
In a future setting, there’s a Church of Thor in New York City. Reverend Cecil MacAdam is one of its devout followers. Contrary to his faith, however, MacAdam finds himself unwittingly transformed into a villain with god-like powers, rather than the hero he admires.
2099’s version of Thor possesses a hammer sharing characteristics with Mjolnir, which grants him almost all his powers. Rather than combating lawbreakers, he engages in battles against Future Spider-Man, Punisher, and Doom. In a turn of events, Future Spidey boots the hammer from his grasp, sending it soaring into Valhalla, the floating metropolis.
MacAdam persistently pursued the object, unwilling to let go of his newly-acquired abilities. However, the city suddenly erupted, claiming the life of Thor 2099 amidst the chaos. Despite his immense strength and Thor-like powers, he was too green in combat situations and overeager for power.
15. Dargo Ktor

In the year 2587, the world is in ruins, plagued by despair under the rule of The Corporation. A small group of rebels are working tirelessly to challenge this regime, one of whom is Dargo. Remarkably, Dargo was found worthy by Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, and has taken up the mantle once held by Thor, pushing it even further into the future.
In the heat of action, I managed to wield Thor’s power, yet Mjolnir refused to heed my commands despite my worthiness. Following a fierce clash with Loki, I made the decision to fling Mjolnir through a gateway, allowing the hammer to seek its rightful master once more, surrendering the thunderous might of the God of Thunder.
For only a brief spell, Dargo took on the role of Thor. His valiant act of overpowering Loki using an unruly Mjolnir, combined with his selfless decision to forfeit his newly acquired power, truly warrants recognition among the Top 15 most remarkable feats.
14. Thorlief Golmen (Ultimate Thor)

In comparison to other lists, Ultimate Thor is often ranked higher, but in reality, there are several Thor characters who possess greater power than Thorlief Golmen. This particular version of Thor hails from the Marvel Ultimate universe (hence, the name Ultimate Thor), where Thorlief was portrayed as more serious, aggressive, and vocal in his opinions.
Golmen, known for his vocal advocacy in social and political spheres, asserted he was a reborn incarnation of Thor. Subsequently, due to such extraordinary claims, Thorlief was hospitalized, but later validated his assertions. With reservations, he becomes part of the Ultimate Avengers team, which is stricter and operates by the rules.
Although Thorlief’s hammer looked like Stormbreaker and was called Mjolnir, it wasn’t the original one. Despite his bravery and boldness, his powers were less potent compared to the traditional Thor. Moreover, his combat abilities weren’t refined enough to rank higher on this list. In fact, Magneto managed to take Mjolnir from him effortlessly. Given these circumstances, 14th place seems fitting for Ultimate Thor.
13. Ragnarok Thor

Actually, when I mentioned Ragnarok, I wasn’t referring to the cosmic battle prophecy. Instead, I was talking about the cyborg Thor, a marvelous creation born from the minds of Tony Stark and Reed Richards during the Civil War event. They synthesized an artificial intelligence using Thor’s genetic code as the foundation.
The situation escalated rapidly as Ragnarok possessed all of Thor’s superpowers yet lacked his compassion and virtues, leading him to become chaotic, aggressive, and dangerously out of control. Essentially, Clor (Clone Thor) had completed its task, but it harbored malevolent inclinations. In the end, it was only the genuine Thor who managed to bring Ragnarok under control.
Perhaps although Ragnarok might not have shared the same attributes as Odinson, it was potent enough to slay Goliath. Indeed, she’s more than worthy of a place here.
12. Eric Masterson (Thunderstrike)

Eric Masterson initially donned the Thor persona, later becoming Thunderstrike instead. Whether this was an improvement or degradation is debatable, but it certainly established Masterson as a hero in his own right. For a period, he and Odinson shared one body after Odin combined them. Previously, Masterson had been a faithful sidekick to Thor before nearly meeting his demise.
In a desperate attempt to save his life, Odin combined him with his son. Later on, it proved challenging to separate Thor and Eric due to their bond. After the separation and exile of Thor by Odin, Eric was bestowed Mjolnir and the powers of the Thunder God. But shortly afterwards, Eric was influenced by the Enchantress to attack Sif. However, Thor soon reappeared.
In awe, I recount the tale where Thor, without his powers, triumphed in combat against an adversary. Remarkably, in this process, he managed to reclaim his powers once more. On the other hand, Masterson, unveiled as a pawn of the Enchantress’s manipulations, was bestowed by Odin with a mace and the title Thunderstrike. Although possessing immense power, Masterson’s might paled in comparison to Thor’s.
11. Volstagg (War Thor)

In simpler terms, Volstagg is a trusted battle companion of Thor, hailing from Asgard, known for his striking red beard in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). But unlike Thor, he gained immense power, not as a god, but through intense emotions such as anger, sorrow, and desperation.
During the Secret Wars, Ultimate Thor unintentionally misplaced his Mjolnir through interdimensional gateways. Meanwhile, during the War of Realms that swept across the cosmos, Volstagg served as a senator on Svartalfheim. He collaborated with the young inhabitants of Alfheim, but tragically, they were all lost in the war. Subsequently, Volstagg mourned their loss.
In another universe, someone discovered the misplaced Mjolnir, grabbed it, and showed himself to be worthy. He’s an extraordinarily powerful individual, a remarkable warrior, and driven beyond measure. Yet, his sorrow and rage can occasionally overpower War Thor, which kept him from making the top ten in this particular ranking.
10. Storm Thor

We’ve made it into the elite top ten, launching with an amazing rendition of a unique character called “Storm Thor”. This character is one of only a few extraordinary combinations where the God of Thunder combines forces with another character, resulting in an incredibly powerful hybrid entity.
In the Secret Wars of 2015, God Emperor Doom amassed a force known as the Thor Corps, comprising multiple Thors from diverse realms, functioning as his private military to maintain his power. The Corps was quite extraordinary and peculiar, featuring unique variations of Thor such as Groot-Thor and Dino-Thor, yes, a Thor who was a dinosaur!
In a world filled with superheroes, I can’t help but be captivated by none other than Storm from Earth-904. Transforming into a mighty figure known as Storm Thor, she wielded an enchanted hammer named Stormbringer. Before the arrival of the Thor Corps, she reigned supreme as the Sovereign of Asgard.
9. Beta Ray Bill

Beta Ray Bill is an exceptional and captivating character, initially introduced as a Korbinite anti-hero. His appearance can be quite intimidating, and he engaged in battle with Donald Blake’s Thor initially. Upon taking Mjolnir away from Blake and stripping him of his godly powers, leaving him human once more, Beta Ray Bill demonstrated his worthiness and was granted Thor’s abilities.
Later on, Odin arranged a deadly battle between Thor and Beta Ray Bill to determine who would wield the powers. To everyone’s surprise, the Korbinite emerged victorious. However, it wasn’t until he chose to let Thor live that we understood Bill was a noble character – sacrificing the opportunity to gain the powers in the process.
Impressed by his choice, Odin crafted the Stormbringer for Beta Ray Bill, essentially elevating him to a position similar to Thor, the second Thunder God. Over time, these mighty deities formed an alliance.
8. Jane Foster (Mighty Thor)

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s revealed that actress Natalie Portman’s character, Jane Foster, is set to assume the role of the Mighty Thor. This follows a storyline from the comics where Jane becomes worthy to wield Mjolnir after Odinson lost his worthiness.
Jane, who is currently fighting cancer, feels valued after lifting Mjolnir, which leads her to make a decision to do good and act heroically, even amidst her illness. She appears to possess powers similar to Thor’s, but it’s her unyielding spirit, exceptional intelligence, and boundless goodness that truly warrant her being placed high on the list.
Each time Jane transforms into the Mighty Thor, her cancer worsens. Yet, despite this awareness, she consistently responds when called upon. Such actions certainly embody heroism, if not define it.
7. Thor Odinson (Classic Thor)

It’s quite possible you could find it surprising that Classic Thor (Thor, Odinson, or whatever name you prefer) ranks so highly. Nonetheless, the Thor we’ve been reading about in comics for years is also among the strongest iterations of the character.
Throughout history, Thor has been a part of countless wars, victoriously battling seemingly insurmountable odds. He was one of the pioneering Avengers and played a significant role in captivating audiences with superhero comic books. Despite experiencing various challenges over time, his love and dedication have remained constant.
Despite losing his godly powers and being deemed Unworthy, Odinson persisted in fighting for justice, demonstrating that he’s an extraordinary hero. I was tempted to rank him higher due to his immense power, but those ranked above outmatch him in raw strength. However, this list is about the most powerful Thors, not necessarily the most cherished.
6. MCU Thor

It could be debated that the versions of Thor from classic comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are one and the same character, but this isn’t accurate. In the comics, he’s Earth-616, while in the MCU, he’s Earth-199999. Yes, even the Marvel Cinematic Universe assigns a universe number. However, the question of which Thor is superior between the classic and the MCU version is subjective and depends on personal preferences.
Without a doubt, it’s crucial to consider the tremendous transformation and personal development that took place in Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of the God of Thunder. From starting as a self-assured young warrior to playing the sorrowful, heavy Thor, his character arc has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Despite losing his father, mother, lover, and brother numerous times, having witnessed the murder of his best friend, and experiencing the destruction of his home together with his sister, he miraculously recovered, overcame immense hardships, survived a neutron star’s impact to create Stormbreaker, and emerged even more resilient than before.
It’s clear that the man hurled Stormbreaker with such force that even Thanos, armed with six Infinity Stones, struggled to defend against it. Imagine if Thor had targeted Thanos’ head instead…
5. Iron Hammer

Picture this scenario: What if Thor possessed an exceptional, genius-level intelligence, similar to Tony Stark’s? In this hypothetical situation, we would have a character known as the Iron Hammer – a combination of the intellect and abilities of both Iron Man and Thor.
During the Infinity Warps event, an extraordinary fusion of universes brought heroes (and villains) together to generate entirely novel characters. One such creation was Iron Hammer, also known as Stark Odinson, who was truly awe-inspiring. This character embodied the power of Odinson and blended it with Tony Stark’s genius intellect and technology.
Frankly, it’s astonishing that Iron Hammer isn’t considered the strongest version of Thor yet; I can hardly fathom why such a powerful blend hasn’t been crowned as the most potent hero in history. Yet, there have been instances where we’ve witnessed greater might. Nonetheless, Iron Hammer is undoubtedly strong enough to secure a place among the Top 5.
4. Thor-el

On occasion, Marvel and DC have teamed up, but this particular collaboration stands out as my favorite. In one of the Amalgam Comics, a character known as Thor-el was created, who was actually a fusion of two iconic powerhouses – Thor from Marvel and Superman from DC. The name Thor-el is derived from the combination of Thor and Kal-el, which is Superman’s real name.
At the moment when Superman transformed into his blue energy state before merging with Thor, let’s face it – any combination of these two legendary figures would result in an extraordinary superhero unlike any other. Frankly, Superman is already quite formidable on his own, without needing the powers of the Thunder God. I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment that we haven’t witnessed more of this potential fusion character – Thor-el – in action yet.
3. Cosmic King Thor (Herald Of Thunder Thor)

2020 saw an incredible transformation in the latest Thor series, as the God of Thunder seemed almost unbeatable, receiving a massive upgrade. Even Galactus, the mighty cosmic being, needed Thor’s aid to vanquish Black Winter – a destructive space cloud that has been ravaging for centuries, even consuming Galan’s original galaxy.
In simpler terms, Galactus transfers some of his Cosmic Power to Thor, making him Galactus’s emissary or messenger. If the Silver Surfer were also given these god-like powers, in addition to what Galactus bestowed upon him, you would have a character known as “Cosmic King Thor”.
Essentially, his powers are nearly boundless. He can manipulate cosmic energy at will, and remarkably, he even managed to slay Galactus – the one who bestowed those very powers upon him initially.
Indeed, you’re correct. There are not just two, but more variants of Thor, each possessing power beyond the mighty Cosmic King Thor. Truly, it seems excessive!
2. Rune King Thor

Many people believe that Rune King Thor is the strongest form of Thor yet conceived, a claim I find hard to dispute given his near-omnipotent abilities. While I would place him second on my list, the difference in power is almost negligible.
Rune King Thor is incredibly powerful beyond comprehension, boasting an unmatched strength and profound wisdom. While I won’t go into specifics or conjecture – just understand that at some point, he defeated the beings known as Those Who Sit Above in the Shadows, who are considered the deities of all gods.
They humbly asked for pardon. Moreover, in Thor #84, Runic King Thor annihilated Yggdrasil, thereby conclusively ending the Asgardian Ragnarok cycle. He possesses a strength that transcends the multiverse, making him nearly indestructible, immortal, and invincible.
1. Old King Thor

Ultimately, it’s hard to argue against the might of Elderly King Thor. While Rune King Thor may initially come to mind, let me explain why I think Old King Thor is the most powerful. Old King Thor is the future incarnation of Odinson who survived the annihilation of Asgard, the demise of all other gods, the obliteration of Earth, and even more cataclysms.
As a devoted admirer, I’d put it this way: I, with the Odinforce now known as Thor-force flowing through me, have slain Gorr the God Butcher, Galactus, and other cosmic beings of unimaginable power. Now, bearing the title Old King Thor, The Destroyer, I reign on Asgard’s throne as its final All-Father.
Over time, Thor underwent a change and lost an arm. However, he managed to attach the arm of the formidable Destroyer armor to his own body. It’s important to note that the Destroyer was a collaborative effort among the mighty gods like Zeus, Odin, and others. To make things more intriguing, King Thor, in his old age, obtained All-black, Gorr’s Necrosword – one of the universe’s most potent weapons, known for its ability to behead a Celestial.
In another scenario, remember when the final heroes standing were Old King Thor and Wolverine, battling against Doom who combined the abilities of nearly every hero that once existed on Earth?
In a selfless act, Wolverine sacrifices himself to grant Thor the mighty Phoenix Force, thereby becoming the most formidable superhero across the expansive Marvel Universe. This extraordinary being not only overpowered Doctor Doom but managed it effortlessly.
Imagine possessing the abilities akin to Thor, the Phoenix Force, the Destroyer, Odin, Zeus, and various deities, all while yielding All-black the Necrosword – one of the mightiest weapons known. It’s plausible that this unique incarnation of Thor (Old King Phoenix) could surpass every Thor version and even outmatch the strongest hero of all time.
