– Disney will prioritize quality over quantity when producing Marvel Studios content.
– “Thunderbolts” serves as an example of this new approach.
– Despite its lower initial performance, the film has strong critic and audience ratings.
– This shift in strategy is part of Iger’s plan for the Walt Disney Company since his return two years ago.
It’s clear that our eagerness to fill our streaming service with more content led us to tap into all creative resources, including Marvel, for increased production. However, we’ve come to understand that sheer quantity doesn’t always lead to superior quality. Admittedly, we may have strayed from our original path by producing too much. By streamlining our efforts and allowing Marvel to concentrate heavily on their films, we anticipate this change will yield higher-quality content. I am particularly optimistic about the Thunderbolts project, which I believe will set a strong standard.
Under Bob Chapek’s leadership as Disney CEO, the focus shifted towards producing an abundance of new streaming content for Disney+. This meant that between 2021 and 2023, there were 10 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series, along with 9 films, plus some special presentations on the platform. In comparison, Phase 3 saw “only” 11 films spanning over 3 years. Prior to Disney+, the content was more manageable for fans. With so many projects under Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, the quality of productions seemed to have declined as the era of consistently producing top-tier Marvel movies appeared to end.
In comparison to all post-“Endgame” Marvel Studios films, only “The Marvels” was a clear failure at the box office. Even movies like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Captain America: Brave New World”, which underperformed, had successful openings before their earnings declined. Both of these films are expected to eventually turn a profit. It’s true that in the world of the MCU, even flops are larger successes than most other studios’ hits. However, it seems a slowdown is necessary. We might not reach the heights of Phase 3 again, but we could come close. At least until the X-Men finally join the scene.
