Four women, previously employed as housekeeping staff at the residence of Motown icon William ‘Smokey’ Robinson, have made allegations of sexual assault and misconduct against him. These individuals are referred to as Jane Does 1, 2, 3, and 4 in court documents, having filed a civil lawsuit in the Los Angeles Superior Court on May 6th. The lawsuit demands $50 million in compensation for the alleged wrongdoings.
The legal action encompasses claims of sexual assault, wrongful confinement, carelessness, and workplace violence against the gender spectrum. Additionally, it identifies Robinson’s spouse, Frances Robinson, and cites labor offenses, including not paying the minimum wage, failing to provide overtime pay, issuing inaccurate pay statements, and fostering a harmful work environment, as reported by The Guardian.
The complaint states that the alleged sexual assaults occurred repeatedly during the time the women were employed by the Robinson family. Women identified as Jane Does 1, 3, and 4 assert that Robinson sexually assaulted them in the ‘blue bedroom’ of his Chatsworth home. It is said that he would spread a towel prior to these alleged incidents.
Jane Doe 2 asserted that Robinson sexually assaulted her in the laundry room and garage of a house where, as per the accusation, there were no evident surveillance cameras. Similarly, Jane Doe 4 claimed to have been sexually assaulted by Robinson at his homes in Las Vegas and Bell Canyon.
Lawyer John Harris, representing Harris & Hayden from Los Angeles, stated that these women found themselves in a precarious financial situation and were apprehensive to come forward. “These are Hispanic women who worked for the Robinsons, earning wages below the minimum,” Harris explained at a press conference.
As a passionate advocate, I can’t help but emphasize that many women, struggling with limited means and precarious circumstances, often found themselves defenseless against the threat of sexual assault. They were constantly haunted by the fear of losing a day’s pay, unable to cover essential expenses like rent or groceries for their loved ones. Harris underscored this reality, stating, “They all lived in constant dread of missing a paycheck and finding themselves unable to meet their basic needs.
Additionally, the lawsuit implicates Frances Robinson on accusations of fostering a hostile work environment. Women involved in the case allege that she employed derogatory language based on ethnicity and neglected to address her spouse’s inappropriate behavior.
As per attorney Herbert Hayden’s statement, it’s suggested that Frances Robinson was cognizant of her spouse’s activities and leveraged their social standing, as well as the employees’ dependency on their salaries, to exert power over them. Attorney John Harris further stated that they believe Smokey Robinson displays signs of being a dangerous and habitual sexual predator who requires intervention. At present, no criminal complaints or police reports have been lodged against him.
