The concept of assembling the Thunderbolts as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s new version of the Avengers originated with Marvel Studios’ chief, Kevin Feige.
If you’ve been out of the loop, there was a shift in the marketing strategy for “Thunderbolts” on Monday. They decided to rename it to “New Avengers“.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead: The New Avengers team was introduced at the end of the comic series, Thunderbolts. This isn’t connected to the movie and is primarily relevant in the post-credit scene hinting at the Fantastic Four. So, what happens next? You’ll find out in the comic book, Avengers: Doomsday.
Feige’s New Avengers Move Feels Like a Desperate Marketing Gimmick
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’ve been following the buzz about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it seems there’s some debate over the recent decision to rebrand “Thunderbolts” as the “Young Avengers.” Some folks think this change implies that Marvel may have initially doubted the commercial potential of Thunderbolts, given they were originally positioned as a team to replace the Avengers. However, considering the increased marketability of the younger heroes, it’s not unreasonable to assume this could be a strategic move rather than a sign of lack of faith in the Thunderbolts.
Fans of comic books could find themselves undecided since the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s portrayal of the Avengers pales in comparison to their comic book counterparts, such as Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Sentry.
It appears as if Kevin Feige is making a determined effort to persuade Marvel Cinematic Universe fans to embrace the upcoming “Thunderbolts” film, which, unfortunately, had one of the lowest openings among all MCU movies when adjusted for inflation and currently ranks second.
Kevin Feige Personally Pushed the New Avengers Rebrand
It’s not unexpected that the concept of the Thunderbolts replacing the Avengers was devised by Kevin Feige, as shared by Thunderbolts co-writer Eric Pearson with The Hollywood Reporter.
In my conversation with Kevin Feige, I expressed my desire to create a Thunderbolts film. I suggested that Yelena would be instrumental in bringing the team together against Valentina. My initial pitch didn’t quite hit the mark, but my second proposal was almost identical to the movie we have today. During my presentation, Yelena was meant to whisper to Valentina, “You work for us now.” I proposed that Valentina would be compelled to present the Thunderbolts to the public, and Kevin suggested renaming them as the Avengers. This took me by surprise, but I went along with it!
From what I gathered, his main point in the Marvel pitch meeting was clear, and when you get one key point from a pitch, it’s time to move on. So, I responded casually with something like, “Got it, neat. I’m not sure about your strategy for the New Avengers.” Then we had numerous conversations: “Capital N or lowercase n? Are they new versions of the Avengers or simply the New Avengers?” However, that concept was Kevin’s idea, and it seems to be part of a larger, four-dimensional strategy that I’m not fully aware of yet.
Feige’s Post-Endgame MCU Has Been One Failure After Another
Kevin Feige has made a lot of questionable decisions about the MCU post-Endgame.
Recently, the creative direction taken by him with M-She-U hasn’t resonated well with fans. He brought in creatives whose decisions have been met with skepticism, resulting in a disjointed Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The Disney+ shows have faced their fair share of challenges, and Feige has experienced a series of setbacks on the big screen, with movies like Black Widow, Eternals, Shang-Chi, Quantumania, The Marvels, Captain America: Brave New World, and now it seems that Thunderbolts may follow suit.
The Wall Street Journal’s latest report suggests that Feige is restructuring Marvel Studios. However, considering the upheaval he has caused within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one might argue that it’s time for a change in leadership at Marvel – Feige himself.
