Steven Spielberg’s classic film, “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” continues to impress audiences even after many years since its release. However, there was nearly a different storyline included that could have significantly altered the movie’s mood at various points. This intriguing subplot revolved around the possibility of romantic feelings between the charming alien and… Elliot’s mother? Yes, it seems authentic. The actress who portrayed Mary, the family’s matriarch (Dee Wallace), recently revealed this discarded plot twist on the “Still Here Hollywood” podcast, as reported by “Comic Book.” Here’s what she shared about it:
In the movie E.T., there’s an underlying storyline suggesting that E.T. has romantic feelings towards Mary. These feelings are hinted at throughout the film, although they aren’t fully explored. One scene where this is suggested happens when E.T. places Reese’s Pieces on your bedside table while you’re asleep. During the filming of this scene, director Steven Spielberg wanted the sheet covering you to be lower than you felt comfortable with, as it added a more romantic atmosphere. However, you objected that the movie was a family film and a compromise was reached, raising the sheet almost to your shoulder blades, which you were satisfied with.
In my opinion, while ‘E.T.’ doesn’t exactly pursue a romantic liaison with Mary, the mother of Elliot, there’s a moment that suggests E.T. might have had feelings for her. However, it’s not an overtly strange or inappropriate scenario considering the film presents E.T. as more of a child-like figure. Admittedly, children can harbor unrequited crushes on adults, but such a development could have diverted attention from E.T.’s crucial relationships with Elliot, Gertie, and Michael.
It was appropriate for Dee Wallace to request its exclusion from the final edit, but watching the movie today with the knowledge that E.T. is fond of a human woman does change the entire feel of it. Indeed, ’80s films could occasionally be quite strange, and that’s precisely why we adore them.
