In a new turn of events, director Spike Lee takes up the helm once more for his forthcoming thriller titled Highest 2 Lowest. Joining forces with Denzel Washington yet again, this will be their fifth collaboration in a film adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s book that follows a businessman grappling with how to distribute his wealth. The debut trailer of this highly anticipated production has been unveiled by A24, and it is slated to have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Besides the actor known for Gladiator II, the film will also feature A$AP Rocky, Dean Winters, Jeffery Wright, and Michael Potts, along with others. At the Red Sea Film Festival, Lee praised the movie, stating, “One of the greatest advantages of film school is that it exposes you to cinema from around the world, not just Hollywood.
He went on to explain that watching Kurosawa’s movie “Rashomon” and its unique structure sparked his idea for creating “She’s Gotta Have It.” The main theme in “Rashomon” is a crime witnessed by three different individuals, each providing their own account of the events. Similarly, Nola Darling in “She’s Gotta Have It” has three partners who perceive her uniquely. Since the start of his career, he has been inspired by Kurosawa’s work.
In the trailer, it begins with a voiceover from Washington, who states, “Life is about more than just earning money; it’s about maintaining integrity, which is what truly defines you.” The footage continues to depict the ups and downs experienced by a businessman during his professional journey.
As I reflect on my fifth project with the legendary Spike Lee, I can’t help but feel grateful for this continued creative journey we’ve embarked upon together. This film, produced by A24, Escape Artists, Mandalay Pictures, 40 Acres and a Mule, and Filmworks, is another testament to our shared passion for compelling storytelling. I’m simply thrilled that we’ve reached this milestone of five collaborations.
Highest 2 Lowest will hit theaters on August 22, 2025.
