Rina Sawayama will once again take on the character of Akira in Donnie Yen‘s upcoming film, John Wick: Chapter 4 spinoff titled Caine. Akira, the courageous daughter of Hiroyuki Sanada’s Shimazu Koji, was first introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4 and quickly gained popularity among fans due to her thrilling fight scenes.
In this upcoming project titled “Caine,” the actress will be reviving its raw, wild nature under the guidance of director Yen, with franchise producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee overseeing the production. Chad Stahelski, through his 87Eleven Entertainment banner, is also involved as a co-producer.
Simultaneously, Yen has taken on an executive producer role for the project. Production is scheduled to start later in the year, with Lionsgate planning to debut it at Cannes, as reported by Variety. Stahelski spoke about this to the outlet and commented on Sawayama’s reappearance within the franchise.
He commented, “Rina is incredibly bold,” she said. “I admire her performance in Chapter 4 and am eagerly anticipating their reunion with Caine. Yen also expressed his joy at having the actress return to the John Wick universe for a thrilling new adventure.
In the upcoming spinoff, the filmmaker hinted that he plans to develop and enhance the character played by Yen, who had an outstanding storyline in Chapter 4. Excited about the opportunity, Yen – known for creating the thrilling Hong Kong-style action films we love – can’t wait to rekindle the cinematic enchantment.
While details about the plot are being kept secret, it’s been announced that the storyline for the upcoming film will continue with John Wick: Chapter 4. Additionally, a spinoff written by Mattson Tomlin is in the works, which promises to broaden the scope of the John Wick universe. The last movie introduced several intriguing characters, one of them being Akira.
The creators believe that it’s about time they explored more.
Adam Fogelson, head of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed great excitement as he shared that Rina will be returning to the franchise. He mentioned that there are still matters left undone for both Caine and Akira.
