Since the 2010s, Blumhouse Productions have ruled the roost in the horror movie genre, largely due to the surge of various horror film series they oversee.
The Ouija movies are part of the Blumhouse production company, having been praised for their high-quality horror elements. However, if you’re curious about how many Ouija films there are or the recommended viewing sequence, let me provide some guidance on that topic!
Editor’s Note: The last update was in May of 2025.
All 4 ‘Ouija’ movies in release date order
In the 2010s, I found myself drawn to the chilling realm of horror films produced by Blumhouse Productions. This affinity was significantly strengthened following their extraordinary success with the low-budget ($15,000) production, Paranormal Activity. This seemingly modest investment yielded an astonishing return at the box office, raking in hundreds of millions.
Increasingly, Blumhouse productions found their place in cinemas. Among these was the profitable series of “Ouija” films, which gained immense popularity. However, one might wonder, how many “Ouija” movies have been made so far?
There are only two Ouija movies, namely:
- Ouija (2014)
- Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)
Additionally, two unacknowledged continuations of the films and numerous other productions centered around the Ouija board have been produced as well.
- Ouija 3: The Charlie Charlie Challenge (2015)
- Ouija Summoning or You Will Kill (2015)
- The Ouija Exorcism (2015)
- The Ouija Possession (2016)
- Ouija 4 (2016)
- Ouija: Deadly Reunion (2021)
Are all ‘Ouija’ movies connected? What’s the best way to watch them in?
The initial pair of ‘Ouija’ films form a cohesive storyline within the recognized “series.” However, some subsequent ‘Ouija’ movies aren’t linked to the primary narrative and can be skipped if desired.
For an optimal viewing experience, I’d recommend watching all the movies under that banner in order of their release dates. When considering chronology, it’s important to note that “Ouija: Origin of Evil” (released in 2016) serves as a prequel to “Ouija” (released in 2014). To get the full story, you should watch “Ouija: Origin of Evil” before moving on to “Ouija”.
‘Ouija’ movies in chronological order
The chronology of ‘Ouija’ movies is not as straightforward due to the 2014 movie being a prequel.
1. Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)
In terms of storyline, “Ouija: Origin of Evil” is the initial film in the Ouija series, despite being released two years after the original. The title implies it delves into the origins of the entire Ouija tale, making it advisable to watch this movie first if you wish to follow the chronological sequence of the Ouija films.
The impressive box office earnings of the initial Ouija film, which had a production budget of roughly $5 – 8 million but went on to make over a hundred million, convinced Blumhouse Productions to create another Ouija movie, hoping to replicate the same financial success. Origin of Evil was planned as a means to rectify certain issues with the original film. To achieve this goal, Mike Flanagan was appointed director for this sequel.
You’re likely familiar with Mike Flanagan due to the remarkable success of his horror series on Netflix. Following his acclaimed work on Ouija: Origin of Evil, he continued with projects such as The Haunting series, Midnight Mass, and Gerald’s Game. All these productions have been significant hits for Netflix. Therefore, if you’d like to gauge the quality of Origin of Evil, it may be beneficial for you to watch those shows first.
To put it simply, Flanagan significantly improved the quality of Ouija: Origin of Evil compared to the original film. The initial Ouija movie wasn’t well-received by critics and didn’t have a large budget, but Origin of Evil rectified the flaws of the first film by offering superior scares that are sure to frighten audiences. This was possible because Flanagan had complete creative control over the sequel.
In “Ouija: Origin of Evil,” we delve into the history of the family residing in the pivotal house from the initial Ouija film. This tale revolves around Alice Zander and her offspring, Lina and Doris. Alice, a charlatan medium, deceived people with her fraudulent readings, unaware that her daughter Doris possessed genuine psychic powers.
The story took a turn for the worse when Alice introduced a Ouija board into their performance. Doris then used it unknowingly, freeing a malevolent spirit residing in their home. This event was central to the entire plot of the movie, as the possessed Doris wreaked havoc and death wherever she went, creating the main focus of the film “Origin of Evil”.
Following the unfortunate incident involving her daughter, Alice took on the task of figuring out a method to expel the demon that had taken over. In a desperate attempt, Lina, Alice’s other child, went to extreme lengths which eventually set the stage for the events depicted in the first Ouija film. However, it’s recommended you watch the movie yourself to fully understand the storyline and avoid any potential spoilers.
It’s important to note that if you start with Ouija: Origin of Evil, you may be left feeling let down by the original Ouija film. This is because Origin of Evil is generally considered a superior production compared to the first movie. However, if you prefer to follow the storyline chronologically, it would make more sense to watch Ouija: Origin of Evil before the original Ouija.
2. Ouija (2014)

Although Ouija: Origin of Evil came out before it and is technically the first film in the series, Ouija actually takes place after the events of Origin of Evil as its storyline follows on from the second Ouija movie. Therefore, for those who want to follow the correct timeline of the films, it’s best to watch this movie after Ouija: Origin of Evil.
For ages, tales about the mysterious Ouija board have persisted in our society, with many attempting to communicate with the deceased using homemade Ouija boards. It’s astonishing that it took so long for someone to create a film based on this lore, which has piqued people’s interest for quite some time due to their curiosity about Ouija boards. Consequently, there was a great deal of anticipation surrounding this movie.
Fundamentally, a Ouija board serves as a tool for individuals to attempt communication with spirits of the deceased. The board is marked with alphabetical letters and numbers, and during gameplay, participants place their fingers on a moving device or ‘conduit’. This conduit supposedly moves across the letters and numbers in response to spirit activity, spelling out messages from the otherworldly entity. This very scenario unfolds in the movie called Ouija.
In the game of Ouija, Laine, deeply affected by the death of her dear friend Debbie, sought solace and understanding. Debbie had taken her own life, a fact that Laine found hard to believe, as she didn’t think Debbie was someone who would resort to such an act. To uncover the truth, Laine turned to the Ouija board that Debbie herself had used prior to her unexpected demise. Together with her group of friends, they played the game in search of answers.
As a movie enthusiast, I and my friends aimed to reach out to Debbie, hoping she could shed some light on the reasons behind her tragic demise. In the beginning, we believed we were conversing with Debbie herself as the Ouija board spelled “Hi friend.” But soon enough, it was clear that it wasn’t really Debbie because the messages persisted in following each of us wherever we went.
It gradually became evident that the spirit present wasn’t Debbie, when one of the friends in the group met an unusual death. This friend’s mouth had been sewn shut while brushing teeth, and later, it seemed like she was possessed by the spirit, violently banging her head against the bathtub until she passed away.
Because of the events leading up to their friend’s demise, Laine and her companions embarked on a quest for an explanation regarding the ghost that had been dogging them since they played the Ouija board game. Their findings eventually brought them to Paulina, who is in fact Lina from Ouja: Origin of Evil. This is where things got intriguing as it tied together events from both movies, as it was disclosed that the malignant spirit stalking Laine and her group was a direct result of the happenings depicted in Origin of Evil.
In an attempt to understand and halt the mysterious deaths of her companions, Laine embarked on an investigation to uncover the truth behind these events. Her findings ultimately linked back to the events in the finale of Origin of Evil; details we won’t disclose here as it’s best experienced firsthand through watching the series.
Clearly, Origin of Evil serves as the backstory that paved the way for the occurrences depicted in the Ouija film. Therefore, watching Origin of Evil prior to Ouija will help clarify the plot twists from the first Ouija movie, making it less puzzling.
Actually, the conundrum lies in the fact that the plot twists are intentionally included to keep the film unforeseen and thrilling. As a result, viewers who watched Origin of Evil prior might not be taken aback by the twists in Ouija, since they’ve already seen it first. This is the reason why Ouija was screened before Origin of Evil.
One issue arises when considering Ouija; it falls short compared to The Conjuring 2 (Origin of Evil) in terms of overall quality. Despite its budget constraints, it manages to deliver some decent scares that keep you engaged. However, viewing The Conjuring 2 prior to Ouija will make it clear just how substantial the difference is between these two films when it comes to their artistic merit.
If you’re someone who prefers watching movies in sequence, it would be best to watch “Ouija” following “Ouija: Origin of Evil”. This way, you’ll have a better understanding of the backstory related to Paulina/Lina and her family. However, do keep in mind that the quality gap between “Ouija” and its prequel is quite substantial, so manage your expectations accordingly.
3. Ouija 3: The Charlie Charlie Challenge (2015)

In an unusual turn of events, a quirky house proprietor with a knack for the macabre invites a crowd of teenagers to participate in the chilling game titled “Charlie Charlie” within his residence throughout the night. Initially, it seems like just another harmless prank; however, what begins as an eerie pastime quickly escalates into a life-threatening ordeal, compelling each participant to struggle for their survival.
The new movie we’re discussing has no connection whatsoever to the first two movies that came before it. It’s been helmed by director Derek Presley, featuring Mason Dauti, Abby Joy, and Marissa Chibli in leading roles. Despite not being an official sequel, some consider it as such due to its similar storyline and, let’s face it, the identical title.
The quality drop is noticeable.
4. Ouija Summoning (2015)

In simpler terms, the horror movie titled “Ouija Summoning” revolves around a captivating female protagonist who encounters an evil entity following a seemingly harmless Ouija board session that takes a dark turn. The film is the brainchild of director and screenwriter Marwan Mokbel and features Tara Shayne, Marty Dew, and Kristen Hagen in key roles.
5. The Ouija Exorcism (2015)

In 1985, a strong exorcist confined a malevolent spirit within a Ouija board. Unbeknownst to him, his son later played with this board, inadvertently freeing the spirit. To shield his child from harm, the exorcist exiled him until the demon was vanquished. Thirty years passed, and after the exorcist’s demise, his grandson discovered the board and repeated the error, resurrecting the spirit to torment those who had initially imprisoned it.
The movie is helmed by Nick Slatkin as both director and writer, featuring performances by J. Damian Anastasio, Brittney Bertier, and Cameron Bigelow.
6. The Ouija Possession (2016)

The Haunting of the Ouija Board
Storyline: A group of youngsters stumble upon an old spirit board in their family’s cellar. Unaware of its sinister history, they play with it, unintentionally invoking a deceased relative who starts haunting them from beyond the tombstone. The movie is helmed by director and screenwriter Luis Carvalho and features James Barrett, Ryan Boudreau, and Nicole Lasala in lead roles.
7. Ouija 4 (2016)

The 2015 Hong Kong horror flick, initially known as “Are You Here” or “Dip Sin Dip Sin” in Cantonese, was later renamed for its DVD release as “Ouija 4”. Despite being unofficial, it serves as a sequel to the Ouija series. However, it’s not linked to the films produced by Blumhouse Productions. The plot revolves around business partners who encounter supernatural horror when they engage in an online Ouija board game.
Unlike Ouija 3: The Charlie Charlie Challenge, this entry does feature a Ouija board.
8. Ouija: Deadly Reunion (2021)

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, Ouija: Deadly Reunion unfolds a chilling tale where I, along with a group of friends, find ourselves entangled in an enigmatic web of strange occurrences before a birthday celebration in a sprawling warehouse. Curiosity gets the better of two of us when we stumble upon an ancient Ouija board and, driven by morbid fascination, we attempt to reach out to the spectral presence of former tenants who had met their untimely end due to a past calamity.
