Thunderbolts Box Office Preview: $11.5M, Matches Low Expectations

Last night marked the premiere of Marvel’s Thunderbolts, and it generated approximately $11.5 million at the box office during its Thursday preview screenings.

Brave New World” made on its opening Thursday.

If the earnings at the Thunderbolts cinema screenings maintain their current pace, it might surpass expectations. At present, predictions are quite modest, ranging from $70 million to $75 million, making it the second-lowest box office forecast among Marvel Cinematic Universe films, only outperforming The Marvels. However, given these low estimates, there’s potential for significant improvement. If it manages to reach around $80 million, that would align with the earnings of Black Widow ($80.3M), which this film can be considered a sequel to.

Pre-sales for both The Eternals and Thunderbolts were comparable, but on its Thursday release, Thunderbolts surpassed Eternals’ $9.5 million. However, when adjusted for inflation, there isn’t a significant difference between the two.

Brave New World” earned $414 million at the global box office, which isn’t a strong performance. If “Thunderbolts” ends up with similar earnings, it would still be considered weak, as the movie reportedly cost around $200 million to produce, plus marketing costs. It’s likely that “Thunderbolts” will rank among the lowest-grossing movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, much like “Captain America 4” and “The Marvels”.

Thunderbolts reactions

I watched Thunderbolts last night, and overall, I enjoyed it. While it’s definitely entertaining, it falls short of being flawless. It caters more to dedicated fans with its intricate plotlines, and there are certainly some exciting moments to appreciate. For a detailed analysis, check out my review here.

The movie “Thunderbolts” boasts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 89%, not too shabby by any means. Interestingly, the fan score is exceptionally high at 96%, which appears quite extraordinary to me. This could be due to the hype surrounding Thursday previews, where Marvel enthusiasts, often referred to as “zombie stans,” seem to devour anything from Kevin Feige’s production line. On IMDb, it’s rated a solid 7.8 at present.

The deadline for Thunderbolts, according to Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak, has garnered an impressive 4.5 out of 5 stars. Additionally, a whopping 74% have rated it as “great,” with a strong intention to recommend it. Notably, kids under 12 years old and their parents have given it a perfect score of five stars.
