Microsoft has formally disclosed an increase in the cost for all Xbox Series gaming systems, along with controllers and headphones. Prices for games are set to begin at $80.
Microsoft Explains the Price Hike
Microsoft officially announced the news on Thursday along with the new pricing:
Starting from May 1st, we’ve made changes to the suggested retail prices for our consoles and controllers globally. Additionally, we anticipate adjusting the price of certain upcoming first-party games, starting this holiday season, to $79.99. Purchasing these titles on the Xbox Store grants an advantage – Xbox Play Anywhere – which means you buy once and can play on both console and PC without any extra cost.
It’s clear that these adjustments may seem difficult, but they were thoughtfully implemented based on current market trends and escalating production costs. Moving forward, our primary goal remains providing a broader range of gaming experiences, accessible across various devices, while maintaining the worth for our Xbox community.

Console Price Hikes Hit Across the Industry
Rising prices for gaming consoles and related equipment can be linked to the Trump administration’s recently implemented tariffs on electronic devices, especially those produced in China. These tariffs have had a substantial impact on the cost models of leading video game corporations.
Nintendo has revealed that it will be selling games priced at eighty dollars for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Although there have been delays in pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 due to worries about tariffs, the original launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unaffected.
Additionally, Sony has increased the price of PlayStations in regions like Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Currently, the PlayStation 5 Pro retails at approximately $700 in the United States.
