In The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, ‘The Rat Infestation’ is one of the initial missions players can embark on for the Fighters Guild. Similar to other quests in the game, it’s a complex task with two potential endings and numerous unexpected events throughout.

Task at Hand: Arvena Thelas, our quest provider, is dealing with an unwelcome invasion in her basement – it’s overrun by malnourished Mountain Lions, disturbing a rat nest she meticulously constructed. Your mission is to aid Arvena in resolving this issue and uncover the identity of the culprit pulling the strings from behind the scenes.

A Rat Problem Quest Walkthrough

To kick off ‘A Rat Problem,’ locate Azzan in the Anvil Fighters Guild. He’s typically stationed by the training dummy on the main level. If this is your initial contract with the Fighters Guild, choose the ‘Contract’ option. Azzan will then guide you to converse with Arvena Thelas, a Dunmer residing nearby who requires assistance with her pesky rodent issue.

  1. Follow the quest marker to Arvena Thelas’s house and speak with her. She will tell you that Mountain Lions have been found in the basement where she keeps her pet rats.
  2. Head down to the basement and kill the Mountain Lion.
  3. Report back to Arvena, and she will direct you to consult the services of Pinarus Inventius, the resident expert hunter of Anvil.

    4. Pinarus Inventius will agree to go on a hunt for any Mountain Lions nearby with you. Follow him outside the city gates, and you’ll encounter four Mountain Lions. Slay them.

  4. Return to Arvena and report your progress. She will instruct you to kill another Mountain Lion who has infiltrated her basement. Do so.
  5. Speak with Arvena again, and she will request that you find the root cause of the problem. The main suspect is Quill-Weave, a female Argonian neighbor who constantly complains about Arvena’s rats.

Avoid killing Mountain Lions until Pinarus Inventius arrives, as it usually disrupts the quest.

How to Catch Quill-Weave in Oblivion Remastered

Following the resolution of the Mountain Lion issue, Arvena asks you to examine Quill-Weave, her neighbor, under cover of darkness to uncover any suspicious activities she might be engaged in during the nighttime hours. Here’s what you should do:

1. Gather necessary equipment for nocturnal surveillance (e.g., night vision goggles, hidden cameras, etc.)
2. Plan a stealthy approach to Quill-Weave’s residence without being detected.
3. Observe and document any unusual activities or patterns that may hint at wrongdoing.
4. Report your findings back to Arvena as soon as possible.

  1. Wait until night. 8 – 11 PM works.
  2. Crouch to enter sneak mode and hide behind the house next to Arvena’s (The Count’s Arms). The goal is to keep Arvena’s backyard within view, without being visible yourself.
  3. Use third-person view to get a bigger field of view.
  4. Keep a lookout for Quill-Weave. She will circle around Arvena’s house before heading to her backyard in order to place slabs of meat near the basement’s entrance.
  5. As soon as you catch her in the act, a popup will appear, indicating that this part of the quest is complete, and now you can confront Quill-Weave about her actions.

During the day, Quill-Weave will orbit around Arvena’s residence without offering any advantage for following. Instead, it will make several stops behind her house. But don’t be fooled by its daytime activities; it won’t take action until night falls.

A high level in Sneak is not required to complete this objective, but it does help.

Should You Tell Arvena Thelas The Truth in Oblivion Remastered

1. Speak to Quill-Weave regarding her activities, and she’ll confess that she’s been intentionally leaving food near Arvena Thelas’ residence to attract rats, hoping the guards would handle them. However, when she finds out it’s Mountain Lions she’s attracted, she’s taken aback and implores you not to disclose her actions. In return, she promises to share her knowledge with you.

2. Have a talk with Quill-Weave about what she’s been doing, and she’ll own up to the fact that she’s been placing food around Arvena Thelas’ house to draw rats out, hoping the guards would take care of them. But when she discovers it’s Mountain Lions she’s drawn in, she’s startled and asks you not to reveal her secret. Instead, she offers to pass on what she knows to you.

Option #1: Tell Arvena About Quill-Weave

If you inform Arvena that it was Quill-Weave who caused the Mountain Lions to appear in her basement, you’ll earn one complimentary level in Speechcraft, gain a Fame Point, and receive a monetary reward. Rest assured, Quill-Weave won’t be apprehended and will continue to offer training in Acrobatics.

Option #2: Do Not Tell Arvena About Quill-Weave

If you don’t disclose to Arvena Thelas that Quill-Weave is responsible for the Mountain Lions in her basement, you’ll earn a complimentary level increase in Acrobatics, an additional Fame Point, and some gold as a reward.
