One fascinating aspect of Oblivion Remastered is that although some elements have been updated, such as character faces, many other aspects remain unchanged, much like an ancient door glitch that allows you to complete the game in less than 15 minutes. It’s wonderful that beneath the sleek new enhancements, you can still encounter the same exploits, bugs, and endearing idiosyncrasies found in the original Oblivion from two decades past.
That includes the appearance of a character voiced by none other than Todd Howard himself.
I regret to inform you that you won’t encounter Todd strolling around town or hiding in a secret chamber. Instead, he’s an NPC (Non-Player Character) from the early development stages of Oblivion and is tucked away in the game files. To find him, you’ll need to use a console command. Even in the remastered version, Todd remains hidden, allowing you not only to converse with him but also to make him fall in love or earn his insults. Alongside other quirks from the original game, this character persists.
How to find Todd Howard in Oblivion Remastered
Make sure to save your game if it’s been awhile, and then hit the ‘~’ key to open up the console.
Then type:
coc toddtest
After hitting ‘enter’, your screen gradually dims, then reveals a cozy dwelling – it’s a test room within an RPG, where game creators often try out new characters or objects for the game.
Inside this humble abode resides an individual known as Alban Corinis, dressed in complete Elven armor. Engage him in conversation, and you might hear something somewhat uncommon from him.
As a gamer, I’ve always known deep down that there’d be a fellow spirit out there who’d listen to my plea and hasten my rescue. It took great courage for you to carry out such an unselfish deed.
“You are indeed a bastard.”
Instead of Todd Howard’s voice, it sounds like Wes Johnson is speaking, delivering lines from the Oblivion quest called “The Forlorn Watchman.” Following this dialogue, you’ll encounter a selection of emotionally charged conversation topics: Anger, Fear, Joy, Indifference, Sadness, and Surprise.
Select one of the given conversation themes, and you’ll get to hear Todd Howard’s voice delivering expressions that echo those feelings, such as “Uh-oh! What are we going to do? I’m absolutely terrified!” or “Wait a minute! That just makes me so angry!
Here’s a clip, and you’ll need to click the volume icon below to turn the sound on:
To put it another way, his performance wasn’t on par with a great one… far from it. However, let’s give him some leeway since he wasn’t trying out for Shakespeare’s Hamlet; instead, he was just recording some trial lines.
By selecting these choices, you aren’t merely making Todd speak for your entertainment, but influencing the way his character behaves. Instead of using the Oblivion persuasion mini-game, you’re directly altering his personality traits. The consequences become apparent when you opt for the “Neutral” response.
If you manage to pick “Happy” frequently and lift Todd’s mood above 90 on multiple occasions, and then you opt for “Neutral”, he may express his affection towards you.
“I can’t recall ever loving moments, like this moment, with you,” says Todd Howard.
Oh, how touching. Yet, quite awkward. I wish I hadn’t materialized in Todd Howard’s peculiar abode and attempted to charm him by pressing his ‘happy spot’.
If you want to make Todd Howard call you a ‘bastard’, simply click on the ‘Angry’ option repeatedly until his mood drops below 20, then select ‘Neutral’ again. And yes, he will say it! In reality, he’s not far from the truth. You are indeed a mischief-maker.
In addition to this test cell, there are other characters nearby. One is an electronic duplicate of Todd Howard who has been confined within the house for the last twenty years. A replica of Alban Corinis can be found standing outside, but it’s Todd’s voice lines that this version emits. The other two characters do not share Todd’s vocal output.
Besides a silent equine, a majestic Dremora, and a character called “Lynda Carter,” who shares her name with Oblivion voice actress and Wonder Woman icon Lynda Carter, the peculiar group has remained idle for close to two decades. Why not swing by for a friendly visit?
