DC Studios Cancels First Movie: Luca Guadagnino’s SGT. ROCK Starring Colin Farrell Not Moving Forward

It’s been just announced that the plans for a Sgt. Rock movie by DC Studios, their World War II action hero, were abruptly halted, barely after they were first made public. Earlier, Daniel Craig, formerly of James Bond fame, was speculated to play him, but Colin Farrell eventually got the part. What made fans particularly thrilled was that Luca Guadagnino, director of ‘Queer’ and ‘Challengers’, was set to direct the Sgt. Rock movie. However, as quickly as this news came, it appears it’s all called off now. As per The Hollywood Reporter, the production of the Sgt. Rock movie has been canceled by Warner Bros. and DC Studios just as they were about to start pre-production in the U.K.

During the audition phase, Sgt. Rock found himself in a challenging situation when the studio made its decision about the cast for the project. The production was seeking actors to portray members of Easy Company, a unit that Sgt. Rock had served with, fighting against Nazi forces in Europe. One of the potential contenders for a role within Easy Company was Mike Faist from Challengers, who is also being considered for a part. Additionally, the studio is scouting for a female actor to play a character in the French Resistance. It appears that Sgt. Rock hasn’t met his final fate yet, as the studio plans to reconsider it next year. Our speculation? Warner Bros. might want to evaluate the success of Superman and Supergirl before giving the green light to any new projects from DC Studios.

According to the initial plan for Justin Kuritzkes’ script, the Sgt. Rock film would revolve around Easy Company and a female French resistance fighter as they search for the legendary Spear of Destiny before it falls into Nazi hands in the DC Comics universe. In this storyline, Hitler was said to have possessed the Spear of Destiny, which offered him protection. This plot device explains why Doctor Fate and the Justice Society didn’t intervene directly against Germany to capture or eliminate Hitler due to the power of the Spear. The idea of a group searching for an ancient artifact while evading the Nazis gives off strong Indiana Jones vibes and promises to be an exciting adventure. Here’s hoping that DC Studios can revive Luca Guadagnino’s Sgt. Rock movie in the future.
