Over the past four decades, the classic film “Back to the Future” continues to be one of the most cherished movies ever made. Characters such as Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, and Doc Brown, portrayed by Christopher Lloyd, have become timeless icons, along with the DeLorean time machine. Despite the release of two sequels, there will never be another sequel, reboot, or spin-off in the “Back to the Future” franchise, as confirmed by original screenwriter Bob Gale. During a recent interview at Fan Fest Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood, when asked about the possibility of the series continuing, Gale responded with a definitive no.
Why do they keep harping on that subject all the time? I can’t help but wonder if they think that repeating it will somehow make it happen. It seems to me like they’re well aware that, in every interview, people always ask about a “Back to the Future 4”, or a prequel, or a spinoff, and yet they never materialize. They just seem content with how things are now. It may not be perfect, but as Bob Zemeckis used to say, “It’s good enough.
Gale acknowledged Steven Spielberg, the producer of “Back to the Future,” for preventing any further installments in the franchise, much like he protected “E.T.” from getting a sequel, while “Jaws” didn’t receive the same treatment. It’s astonishing that the film remains culturally significant without any new movies or TV spinoffs in 35 years, considering its massive fanbase who dressed up as characters for Fan Fest Night. There’s nothing quite like it. However, there has been one successful spin-off: a Broadway musical that’s traveling worldwide. The question is, how long will they be able to keep Universal from turning the musical into a film?
