Duolingo intends to shift towards increased AI usage and reduced human involvement. In a message sent to all staff, co-founder and CEO Luis von Ahn announced that the company will embrace an “AI-centric” approach, which was also posted on Duolingo’s LinkedIn page.
As per von Ahn, being “AI-first” implies that a company will progressively cease relying on human contractors for tasks that artificial intelligence can perform. He further stated that this shift would require a significant overhaul of our work methods because making minimal adjustments to systems designed for humans won’t suffice in achieving the goal.
As part of the change, Duolingo will:
- Use AI more in hiring and performance reviews
- Only allow new hires if a team truly cannot automate the work
- Reduce the number of contractors doing tasks AI can do
Ahn stated that Duolingo will continue to prioritize its employees’ well-being, and clarified that the aim isn’t to replace human workers with AI. Instead, the objective is to eliminate bottlenecks, enabling staff to focus on creative tasks and addressing genuine issues, rather than repetitive ones.
He also explained that AI plays a crucial role in Duolingo’s future. In his words, “AI isn’t merely about increasing efficiency; it assists us in achieving our mission. To educate effectively, we must generate a substantial amount of educational material, and manually creating such content is not feasible on a large scale. One of our wisest recent choices was to switch from a laborious, manual content creation process to one driven by AI. Without AI, it would take us several decades to expand our educational materials to more learners. It’s essential for our learners that we deliver this content promptly.
Following the words of Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke, this announcement is made. Before requesting additional team members or resources, Lütke urges everyone to demonstrate “the reason they can’t accomplish their objectives with AI.
