The Last of Us Season 2: What are The Scars? Learn About Newly Introduced Seraphites and Their Role in Bella Ramsey Starrer

In the latest installment of HBO’s The Last of Us, a secretive faction emerges, called the Scars or the Seraphites. Although they are scarcely seen, the series suggests that their narrative will unfold further as the season progresses.

The Scars are a spiritual group that adhere to the tenets of a deceased prophet. According to an elder of their community instructing a young apprentice, they view the cordyceps outbreak as a divine punishment, as detailed by Vanity Fair.

Driven by this conviction, they abandoned contemporary technology and opted for a life sustained by nature. Their lifestyle, characterized as nomadic and ascetic, plays a significant role in shaping their culture. As portrayed in the initial video game, the prophet’s teachings remain influential among the Seraphites even after her passing.

Later on, the Washington Liberation Front, also known as the Wolves, eliminate some members of the Seraphim group. Despite being associated with a rigid religious sect, the Seraphim aren’t depicted as antagonists. The deaths of these individuals provoke contemplation about who truly bears responsibility in this world marred by violence.

Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross, the creators behind “The Last of Us” game, expressed their intention to delve into the concept of a recurring pattern of violence. In an interview with Haaretz in 2023, Druckmann clarified that this theme is not directly tied to or symbolic of any specific group, making it impossible to identify one group as representing ‘this’ and another as representing ‘that’.

Nevertheless, certain spectators argue that the discord between the WLF and the Scars echoes actual tribal disputes, particularly those seen in the West Bank, a fact that Druckmann acknowledged shaped some of his initial ideas.

Up until now, HBO’s portrayal of the Seraphites appears remarkably true to the video game. They don their self-made cloaks, bear distinctive facial markings, and tread stealthily armed with bows and arrows. In the original game, they are engaged in a protracted struggle with the WLF for dominance over what was once Seattle.

Additionally, the series hints at a predicament for Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey, as she finds herself torn between the two groups following her pursuit of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), who was responsible for Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) death.
