The funeral for Pope Francis took place on Saturday within St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican. Thousands of devoted Catholics and more than 50 global leaders gathered to express their condolences for the late Argentine pope, whose 12-year tenure was characterized by compassion towards the mistreated.

Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, at the venerable age of 88. Under the bright spring sky, the square was filled with mourners from the break of dawn. The funeral Mass, attended by international dignitaries like Spain’s King Felipe, Britain’s Prince William, U.S. President Donald Trump, and others, reflected Pope Francis’ focus on pastoral care.

At the event were Argentina’s President Javier Milei, Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Britain’s Prince William, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer along with his wife Victoria, India’s President Droupadi Murmu, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the United States’ President Donald Trump. These global leaders honored the late Argentine pope for his dedication to serving society.

The President Trump, together with his wife Melania Trump, conveyed that they were participating in the funeral as a gesture of respect towards the late pope, despite any previous differences they might have had with him.

In a similar manner, President Zelenskyy and his wife, First Lady Olena Zelenska, journeyed to Rome to express their sympathies. There was talk among officials about the possibility of a meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump as part of the ongoing discussions regarding the conflict.

Pope Francis died following a stroke, barely a month after being discharged from the hospital due to pneumonia. The cardinals swiftly organized his funeral during a meeting, initiating plans for the conclave to select his replacement within three weeks.

In simpler terms, the Vatican highlighted that the Pope’s enduring compassion for the less fortunate would be central to his formal goodbye, mirroring the principles he passionately advocated during his extraordinary reign as Pope.
