Mon Mothma has always been deserving of recognition among the most esteemed rebels in the galaxy long before the series “Andor.” Her significance to the Rebellion was evident when she first appeared as a movement leader in “Return of the Jedi.” Later films and shows, such as “Rebels,” “Rogue One,” and “Ahsoka,” have demonstrated why Mon Mothma played a crucial role in both defeating the Empire and rebuilding the Republic. However, “Andor” is not just adding to Mothma’s story; it is compellingly arguing that she might be the greatest hero in “Star Wars.
Instead of channeling their vast influence, connections, and wealth towards improving society or promoting equality, many of the most influential individuals often prioritize increasing their own wealth and solidifying their position at the top. This can sometimes involve turning a blind eye to or even actively supporting corrupt regimes and unjust systems, which ultimately allows injustice and oppression to persist.
In this universe we know, wealthy and elegant politician Mon Mothma from a rich planet might not challenge Palpatine; instead, she’d likely side with him. However, in the galaxy far, far away, where heroes thrive, Mon Mothma symbolizes one of our world’s most valued principles. This concept appears in both ancient scriptures and contemporary superhero tales. Mon Mothma exemplifies the belief that those with much should give back much, as well as the notion that power brings with it a great burden – “with great power comes great responsibility.
In the Star Wars universe, Mon Mothma consistently leverages her influence and power to denounce oppression. She champions freedom, representing what’s right. Mon Mothma has a powerful voice and uses it to advocate for those who are voiceless and struggling under the iron-fisted rule of the Empire. Her unwavering mission is the cause of countless ordinary people enduring hardship.
Mon Mothma is not unique as a hero within the Star Wars universe, as others displayed similar courage in the face of immense evil. Her late friend Padmé Amidala and several other Senators also resisted Palpatine before Order 66. However, what Andor, particularly in the initial three episodes of season two, has shown is that Mon Mothma shouldered a greater burden than any of them. She waged war against the Empire on two fronts – publicly opposing it in the Senate while secretly engaging in a clandestine struggle behind the scenes. Moreover, she carried out this double-edged role at the expense of her personal happiness, a sacrifice that few will ever have to make.
As a die-hard Star Wars fan, let me tell you that when the galaxy was at its darkest hour, it wasn’t a seasoned warrior or a Jedi who stepped up – no, it was Senator Mon Mothma. With everything she held dear on the line, she became the beacon of hope we desperately needed. The fact that she made such a selfless sacrifice, giving up her daughter’s love in the process, adds an even greater layer to her heroism. Unlike Bail Organa, whose daughter Leia was able to join him in the fight against the Empire, Mon Mothma’s own daughter despised her. Yet, she stood tall, making the ultimate sacrifice for a cause greater than herself.
Mon Mothma was prepared to endure an extraordinary sacrifice, for she believed constructing a liberated world for her child outweighed any affection that child might have for her. She understood that her actions were just, but that didn’t make them any less difficult to carry out. Her beliefs offered no consolation when she tasted her daughter’s animosity on her wedding day. There is no peace in righteousness when one witnesses their daughter embarking on a loveless marriage, leading a life devoid of joy, which Mon Mothma continues to bear because it fulfills her true mission. And this was not made easier by the fact that allowing her daughter’s wedding also aided the Rebellion.
As if the rebellion’s burden wasn’t already too much on my shoulders, I had to offer a piece of my very soul as dessert. I feigned ignorance when Luthen spoke of “handling” Tay Kolma, but deep within me, Mon Mothma understood the inevitable consequences. I knew that my childhood friend would have to pay the ultimate price for his aid – his life, sacrificed for mine.
Relinquishing everything that brings you joy and fulfillment? Forgoing the essence of life’s pleasure? Making sacrifices that cost your child’s love? Letting your child endure hardship for others? Standing by while a friend who supported you perishes? That is an enormous burden to carry. It’s more than most could handle, even if they were willing. And it’s far beyond what we’d expect from someone like Mon Mothma in the Star Wars universe. Many of her peers lose their compassion and concern for others as they amass wealth. At best, many choose to remain idle.
Many people who decide to take action often find they can’t sustain their involvement for extended periods. It’s a burden that proves too heavy for them to bear. In episode three of season two of ‘Andor’, this was evident in Mon Mothma’s character. Overwhelmed by isolation, laden with responsibility and guilt, she momentarily lost control on the dance floor. The emotional turmoil within Mon Mothma – pain, fear, anxiety, hope, duty, shame, and sacrifice – all came to a head in an incredibly moving, heartbreaking, and powerful display by Genevieve O’Reilly in the ‘Star Wars’ series.
At that poignant instant of unfiltered human emotion, there was a hint that Mon Mothma could lose her footing; that the intensity of her determination might overwhelm her. Given all she’s accomplished and sacrificed thus far, it wouldn’t be surprising if she faltered. Yet, we are certain she won’t. We know she’ll persist in the struggle long after her daughter’s wedding day. She’ll rise to the challenge once more, then again, and again. Just like a select few exceptional individuals, Mon Mothma will find the strength to press on, bearing the weighty legacy that will be with her for the remainder of her life.
In a distant galaxy, not too far off, a serene, soothing entity will share with us the tale of numerous Bothans who perished for the Rebellion, a fact that many may overlook due to the series Andor. When she speaks, we’ll grasp the true nature of Mon Mothma – a prosperous senator from Chandrila, who easily could have remained idle, yet chose to put herself on the line that fateful day. She risked her contentment, tranquility, carefree lifestyle, and even her child’s affection for the sake of a noble cause. In essence, she selflessly offered every part of herself for the benefit of others.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to emphasize that although she didn’t engage in space combat against the Empire, or wield a weapon on a battlefield, or even brandish a lightsaber, her battles were significant. She fought tirelessly, and not just against external forces, but also against her own inner struggles. Her war was unique, and it mattered profoundly.
Is it sufficient to proclaim Mon Mothma as the Rebellion’s greatest hero of all time? The series that provokes such a question suggests otherwise. A key, lasting concept in Andor is that rebellions rely on countless unrecognized heroes. There isn’t one person destined to rescue us; instead, we must rescue ourselves. To accomplish this, we need individuals who have nothing to lose and those with everything to lose, united together. However, Andor demonstrates that Mon Mothma is deserving of being counted among the very best heroes in the Star Wars universe.
Mike Walsh, a staff writer for TopMob, believes Genevieve O’Reilly is delivering an exceptional performance in Andor. You can keep up with his thoughts on Bluesky under the handle @burgermike. He’s also known for weighing in on rankings of the Targaryen kings.
