Gossip Girl Star Penn Badgley Reveals WHY He Ultimately Took on Role of Dan Humphrey Despite Initial Denial

Actor Penn Badgley shares the reasons behind his decision to join the cast of Gossip Girl, despite earlier refusals. In a recent interview, he talked about his growing dissatisfaction with the film industry, the importance of change, and the factors that eventually persuaded him to carry on acting.

Almost letting it slip away, Badgley initially declined the opportunity that eventually became integral to his early professional journey. Prior to becoming synonymous with his iconic character, Dan Humphrey, the actor repeatedly refused the role multiple times due to creative fatigue and disinterest towards television during that specific timeframe.

During a recent appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Badgley shared that, following nearly a decade in the industry, he was both emotionally and professionally drained. Having worked steadily since the age of 12, and approaching financial independence by 15, he was tired of the relentless Hollywood grind. To break free from this cycle, he has been exploring other creative outlets, such as music. His love for acting seemed to wane, especially after failing to secure key roles in independent films.

Badgley reminisced, “By the time Gossip Girl arrived, I was already weary of television. I’ve often shared—though perhaps not widely known—that initially, I declined the role. It wasn’t just a casual refusal; instead, I expressed my sincere gratitude for being considered, wished them luck, but politely declined.

The casting process for Gossip Girl moved forward in his absence, yet the producers faced difficulties finding an actor fitting for Dan Humphrey’s role. Eventually, these circumstances led Penn Badgley to reconsider his decision.

Given the uncertainty about financial stability and not knowing what the future held, he was persuaded by his manager and others in his circle that the role might be a good risk to take. Although the prospect of starting anew didn’t scare him, he understood that refusing the chance could mean forfeiting acting as a career option entirely.

Initially, Badgley faced some challenges when he agreed to play the role in Gossip Girl, but eventually grew fond of the character. He admitted that being associated with such a popular show can be limiting, as he might continue to field questions about it even at 40 years old, long after he made the decision to join the cast at age 20. However, he is content with his experience and accepts its impact on his career.

Among the more experienced actors on set, he offered a distinctive perspective shaped by past professional setbacks. Over time, Penn Badgley has maintained a complex connection with the series, acknowledging that while the high-profile aspect of the role provides professional freedom, it can also limit creative expression.
