How to Fill Soul Gems in Oblivion Remastered

In the game ‘The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered’, Soul Gems serve as the essential foundation for the magical system. They are indispensable items to carry in your inventory, particularly for players who prefer a magic-user or mixed magic-user role.

It’s essential to know the locations of Soul Gems, learn their correct usage, and understand the method for trapping souls within them so they can operate effectively.

All Types of Soul Gems

There are seven types of Soul Gems:

Soul Gem Type of Soul Max Charges
Petty Soul Gem Petty Soul 150
Lesser Soul Gem Lesser Soul 300
Common Soul Gem Common Soul 800
Greater Soul Gem Greater Soul 1200
Grand Soul Gem Grand Soul 1600
Black Soul Gem Grand Soul or Black Soul 1600
Azura’s Star Grand Soul or Black Soul 1600

In simpler terms, Black Spirits refer to the souls of intelligent beings, often humanoid in nature, while White Spirits denote the souls of non-intelligent creatures such as Minotaur Lords or Liches. Interestingly, both types of spirits possess equal power.

Except for Azura’s Star, all Soul Gems function as one-time consumables. They disintegrate after being utilized. However, since Azura’s Star can be repeatedly filled with grand souls, it becomes a valuable resource for advanced enchantment in the later stages of gameplay.

How to Get Soul Gems

There are three main ways of obtaining Soul Gems in Oblivion Remastered:

  1. Looting Enemies/NPCs: Enemies sometimes carry Soul Gems on their person. Their possessions can be acquired either by looting their dead bodies or through pickpocketing.
  2. Opening Chests: Containers like chests, sacks, crates, and display cases often hold Soul Gems.
  3. Buying from Vendors: General Goods merchants and Mage vendors often have 10-15 Soul Gems for sale. However, their stock is not only expensive but also limited. It only refreshes once every 7 days of in-game time.

In the game “The Elder Scrolls V: Oblivion Remastered”, the acquisition of items (loot) is graded according to your level. This includes Soul Gems, which you’ll find either Simple or Moderate ones at lower levels, and Superior or Supreme ones at higher levels. However, there are exceptions to this rule.

You can also use Console Commands to give yourself infinite Soul Gems in Oblivion Remastered.

How to Use Soul Gems

In most cases, Soul Gems serve a dual purpose: they can be utilized for imbuing weapons and armor with magical powers, and also for recharging previously enchanted items. This function is made possible by trapping the spirits of creatures or non-player characters (NPCs) that appear within the game into an empty Soul Gem.

  1. To use a Soul Gem to enchant an item, you’ll need to use an Altar of Enchanting, which can be unlocked by becoming an Apprentice in the Mage Guild.
  2. To use a Soul Gem to recharge an enchanted item, simply select the Soul Gem in your inventory, choose the item you want to refill and select Recharge.

How to Fill Soul Gems

You can imprison souls within Soul Gems by employing the Soul Trap enchantment, a Mysticism spell commonly found at mage vendors. When you cast Soul Trap on an enemy just before defeating them, their soul gets drawn into an empty Soul Gem carried by the player, only if there’s sufficient room available in the gem.

The magical ability Soul Trap could also be attached to your weapon, making it so that the power takes effect with each strike. It’s a fantastic enchantment to consider for a backup weapon.

In this universe, the mightier a being, the larger its spirit tends to be. Smaller spirits can be contained within Common Soul Gems, while stronger spirits need more potent Soul Gems for capture. Only the souls of humans can be imprisoned in Grand or Dark Soul Gems (or Azura’s Star).

When you catch a Petty Soul with an unoccupied Grand Soul Gem, it will fill the Grand Soul Gem, but if both a Grand Soul Gem and a Petty Soul Gem are empty, the soul goes into the Petty one. To maximize your Grand Soul Gem’s potential, use Soul Trap on strong enemies only when you have an empty Grand Soul Gem in your inventory. Keep track of the tier of your empty Soul Gems to ensure you trap the right kind of souls.
