An exciting new video game set within Robert Jordan’s extensive ‘Wheel of Time‘ book series is in production. I’m delighted to announce that iwot Studios, responsible for adapting the franchise, has initiated development on a triple-A open-world role-playing game through their newly established gaming division, iwot games. This isn’t simply a secondary project—it’s a significant stride towards bringing the complex, captivating world of ‘Wheel of Time’ to life for gamers on PC and consoles.
The new game is being constructed right from its foundation in Montreal, which is known for its thriving game development scene. At the helm of this project is Craig Alexander, an experienced professional who has contributed significantly to popular games such as ‘The Lord of the Rings Online’ and ‘Dungeons & Dragons Online’ during his tenure at Warner Bros. Games.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got some background in mobile games linked with ‘Game of Thrones’ and DC superheroes. The team I’m part of aims for a three-year development period, which means we’re eyeing a launch likely in 2028. Our objective is to develop a game that grants players the freedom to traverse the entire ‘Wheel of Time’ universe, from renowned cities like Tar Valon and Caemlyn, all the way to the intricate histories hidden within the books’ lore.
This project distinguishes itself by its expansive narrative scope. Rather than focusing on a specific segment of the story or era, it intends to intricately blend the entirety of Jordan’s world. This includes delving into various backstories and settings that span across millennia. With more than 2,700 named characters in the 14-book series, there’s an abundance of tales yet to be uncovered. I find myself envisioning strolls through the Aiel Waste or confrontations with Shadowspawn in the Blight already.
This role-playing game aligns with iwot Studios’ broader strategy to extend the ‘Wheel of Time’ franchise into various forms of media. The studio, having secured the rights for the books in 2004 for film, TV, comics, and games, is currently producing the popular ‘Wheel of Time’ series on Amazon Prime Video, now in its third season. Actress Rosamund Pike plays Moiraine Damodred, leading a band of young protagonists in their fight against the Dark One. The show has amassed a dedicated fanbase, and this game intends to continue that momentum.
As per Rick Selvage, CEO of iwot Studios, in an interview with Variety, the strategy for the game, television series, and movies will be interconnected. This means that the universe portrayed will maintain a cohesive feel, regardless of whether you’re watching, playing, or reading.
Montreal’s dynamic video game development community offers an ideal setting for this project, according to Alexander. He emphasizes that the city’s abundant creativity and skilled workforce are crucial in tackling the complex task of adapting such a substantial story. For enthusiasts like me, the prospect of immersing oneself in Jordan’s universe as a character—perhaps even wielding the One Power—is incredibly enticing. This game could revolutionize how we engage with epic fantasy within video games.
