Liam Payne Death: X Factor Host Dermot O’Leary Speaks Out Against Mistreatment Claims; ‘Culture is Different…’

Dermot O’Leary has spoken up in response to criticism towards The X Factor, particularly following the sad demise of One Direction member Liam Payne. In a chat with The Times, the host tackled worries brought forth by previous contestants about the program’s handling of mental health and support.

Following Liam’s death in October of the previous year, ex-competitors such as Katie Waissel and Rebecca Ferguson, who were close to the singer, voiced criticism towards the show’s management of contestant well-being. However, Dermot, who hosted ITV’s show from 2007 to 2018 (with a brief hiatus), stated that most of the challenging experiences recounted took place post-filming, as reported by Mirror.

According to Dermot, if the show were produced today, it would likely take a different approach due to cultural shifts. However, he emphasized that the show had always been celebratory in nature.

The host admitted that not all contestants had a favorable journey, yet emphasized that the vast majority received good treatment while on the program. In other words, he acknowledged that success and positive experiences weren’t guaranteed for everyone, but overall, the contestants were well-treated. Furthermore, he noted that some who spoke negatively about their time often referred to incidents that transpired after they left the show.

Additionally, Dermot emphasized the importance of discussing post-show support within the entertainment industry more broadly. He noted that many participants might have felt a sense of loss when the show ended and the distinctive atmosphere it provided, implying that our attention regarding care should extend beyond the show’s duration to address what follows after it concludes.

Pondering about Liam, he characterized him as someone who was both insightful and possessing an immature spirit. He emphasized that these qualities were key points in a broader discourse the industry should engage in.

He emphasized that ensuring care in the creation of shows similar to The X Factor is essential. Although he can’t vouch for everyone, he personally felt it was always given due importance during his tenure on the program. Additionally, if the show were produced today, even greater care would be exercised.

In October, Liam Payne tragically passed away following a fall from a balcony on the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires. It was reported that he had been dealing with issues related to mental health and substance abuse prior to his demise. As per media outlets, he was under the influence at the time of his death.

Liam gained widespread recognition in 2010 as a member of One Direction, a band that was put together on The X Factor with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. This group eventually became one of the most successful boybands globally.
