In the midst of a world crumbling under the weight of an apocalypse, it’s essential to find moments of joy, isn’t it? That’s exactly what Eugene embodies. This intriguing character, hidden among us, was maintaining a thriving cannabis farm in a forsaken 7/11 on the outskirts of Jackson. The mere thought warms my heart. Could there be a more perfect location for such an operation than a 7/11? Dive into this narrative as we dissect the enigmatic figure from the games, a man who was married to a therapist, moonlighting as a weed farmer, and left quite the mark on the town’s residents. (And let’s not forget, he met his unfortunate end at the hands of Joel in ‘The Last of Us’ series.)
Who Is The Last of Us‘ Eugene?
In The Last of Us season two, episode one, we’re introduced to Eugene. It is revealed by Joel’s therapist Gail (portrayed by Catharine O’Hara) that Eugene was her deceased husband. Approximately a year prior, Joel had fatally shot Eugene. However, Gail emphasizes it wasn’t just that Joel killed him, but rather how he carried out the act. Given Joel’s reputation for being ruthless, we can guess there’s a deeper story behind the encounter between him and Eugene that led to Eugene’s death.
Gail additionally notes that Eugene had access to top-quality marijuana. Recently, in the second episode of ‘The Last of Us’ season two, we learned his secret – he was maintaining a large marijuana farm hidden from Jackson. He was hesitant to reveal it to Maria as he didn’t think she would approve. However, Jesse is aware of the convenience store because he and Eugene were partners on their first patrol. Jesse clearly has strong feelings for Eugene and speaks highly of him. It’s also revealed that ‘The Last of Us’ character Eugene was a Vietnam veteran and former Firefly operative, but he no longer wished to kill people. This mention of the Fireflies makes Ellie uneasy, and it’s likely due to a past event we can guess about.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve noticed that character Eugene has popped up twice in the initial episodes of “The Last of Us” season two, which makes me speculate that his role will be significant to the overall narrative of this season.
Eugene in The Last of Us Games
In the thrilling world of “The Last of Us: Part II” video game, I’m a character named Eugene. Unlike my expansive backstory in the series so far, this game offers less insight into my personal history. For instance, my wife, a captivating figure in the series, is purely a creation for the storyline. Similarly, the significant event involving Joel and me, as portrayed in the series, does not occur in the game. Instead, these connections are woven exclusively for “The Last of Us” series.
In “The Last of Us—Part II”, it’s Dina who appears to have a bond with Eugene rather than Jesse. However, the nature of this relationship within the series is not yet definitively established. Interestingly, Dina mentions that she learned about electronics from Eugene, which was also shown as something Joel taught in “The Last of Us” TV show.
In the show, similar to what happens, Ellie discovers Eugene’s dog tags and realizes he was a Firefly who served alongside Tommy. The HBO production hasn’t explored Tommy’s connection with Eugene yet. The video game “The Last of Us—Part II” delves deeper into Eugene and Tommy’s time as Fireflies, revealing details about their actions, such as killing and even torturing people slowly. In the game, Ellie ponders more about the harshness of Tommy and Joel’s deeds in relation to Eugene than she does in the series.
In the game, Eugene departed from his family to be part of the Fireflies, while in the The Last of Us series, it appears as though he met Gail following his departure from the Fireflies. Furthermore, there are no indications that Gail and Eugene have offspring in the show, unlike in the game.
In the game, Eugene maintains an expansive marijuana farm, but unlike a convenience store, it’s hidden away in his basement. We find ourselves drawn to the 7/11 over him, but as the story unfolds, we anticipate that The Last of Us series’ portrayal of Eugene could evolve into a more rounded and endearing character than what was previously shown in the games.
Eugene’s Future on The Last of Us TV Series
It’s been confirmed that Joe Pantoliano has been cast as Eugene for season two of “The Last of Us.” Given the significance of this role, it’s safe to assume we’ll see more than just a picture of Eugene as the series progresses. We’re excited about everything we’ve learned about Eugene so far, and if we do get to see him, it will be intriguing to discover how Joel came to kill him and why.
The Last of Us season two continues to air on HBO and Max, Sundays at 9 p.m.
