Penn Badgley Reveals Why He is Relieved That Netflix’s You is ‘Ending’ at Season 5: ‘Know That I Hated…’

Penn Badgley spoke candidly about the final season of his hit Netflix series “You”. As the show approaches its conclusion, the actor who plays the enigmatic Joe Goldberg expressed relief at the news. In an interview with The Guardian, the former “Gossip Girl” star disclosed a deeply personal matter: he has been diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder.

During a chat with a media outlet, Badgley admitted that playing a captivating yet disturbing stalker character on-screen has negatively impacted his psychological wellbeing.

In the Netflix series, the actor who played the lead in Easy A impressively tackled a more sinister character. However, this role seemed to consume aspects of his personal identity too, as he revealed, “I confess I disliked my physical self and yearned for a different body altogether.

Badgley also mentioned that he aspired to resemble the men depicted in movies, yet it appeared as though achieving such a likeness was merely unattainable.

After accepting the part as Joe Goldberg, the actor found himself growing excessively sensitive to various occurrences and circumstances, ultimately leading to a period of social detachment.

As a dedicated follower, I’d express it like this: “During my emergence from depression and seclusion, I found myself voluntarily diving into, yet unwillingly being pulled into, a realm where the more traditionally attractive I appeared, the greater my potential success, and thus, my perceived worth.

He went on to say, “It’s impossible to move beyond the shallow nature of this piece, and once you acknowledge that, you can’t help but see the shallowness of our society, given how it values such work.

The fifth season of this show will start airing on April 24th. If you haven’t caught up yet, all previous seasons can be streamed on Netflix.
