Cynthia Erivo remembered the initial moment she looked upon her shaved head. The actress, who chose to be bald for her Academy Award-nominated portrayal of Elphaba in Wicked: Part One, discussed this personal event with the audience at the Canva Create gathering held at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 10th.
She mentioned, “I felt so exposed and unguarded when there was nothing to see,” she shared. Upon gazing at her reflection, Erivo anticipated growing fonder of the appearance over time. The actress expressed her fondness for having a “clean slate” on her scalp, as it highlighted her other distinctive features.
She expressed her liking for having nothing but short hair around her eyes, mentioning that she’s felt more comfortable since getting the big haircut. Erivo also mentioned that she’d grown to appreciate shorter hairstyles even before taking on the role of Wicked. In the past, she usually sported colorful braids.
She remembered her childhood marked by abundant hair and frequent styling experiments. But during her time at drama school, there was a significant turning point. It was as if an event occurred that made her realize something profound – she desired for her audience to focus more on her facial expressions.
The actress mused that she wanted to experience having a shorter hairstyle, so she opted to get a haircut, aiming to present her genuine self during auditions. Additionally, Erivo pondered on the memorable wig she donned as Elphaba in the 2024 blockbuster film and her artistic partnership with hairstylist Sim Camps.
Erivo mentioned that she shared her desire for micro braids for this particular role. Her friend responded, ‘Let me just pause here a moment, let me think… I’ve got just the right idea!'”
Furthermore, Erivo disclosed that she tends to pick projects based on their characters rather than the overall production quality.
