Why New P*rnographers ‘Severed All Ties’ With Drummer Joseph Seiders? Details of Arrest Revealed

44-year-old Canadian indie-rock drummer Joseph Sciders from The New Pornographers was taken into custody for holding illegal images of minors, and his band has cut all connections with him following this revelation, which was officially announced by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in a statement released on Thursday.

Reports indicate that on April 7th, police were made aware of Seiders’ suspicious behavior. Two days after, he was apprehended at a Chick-fil-A in Coachella Valley. This occurred when an employee observed him entering and exiting the restroom with underage boys.

A young boy aged 11 mentioned to the police that Mr. Seiders had secretly filmed him on his mobile phone, while the boy was in the restroom at that specific spot, as reported by Pitchfork.

Following thorough investigations at his home, car, and mobile device, the police uncovered substantial proof linking him to two alleged incidents, plus further criminal offenses. He was subsequently detained in the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio for accusations involving possession of child pornography, molestation, invasion of privacy, and an attempt at such privacy violation.

Shortly following the arrest, a representative for New Pornographers issued a statement, expressing that the group was “completely stunned, appalled, and saddened” by the allegations against Seiders. The band swiftly cut off all connections with him and conveyed their sympathies to everyone impacted by his behavior.

According to The Guardian, Seiders’ bail is set at $1 million, and he is due in court on April 22.

Originating from Winchester, Massachusetts, Seiders received his education at Pinkerton Academy. He honed his drumming skills under the tutelage of his father. Apart from The P*rnographers, he has collaborated with numerous other artists such as Emitt Rhodes, John Oates, Tracy Bonham, Juliana Hatfield, Chris Mann, Gary Jules, Bleu, Josh Kaufman, Pat Badger, Night Terrors of 1927, and Val McCallum, to name a few.

In 2014, Seiders became the drummer for the Canadian band led by AC Newman and the Grammy-nominated artist Neko Case, stepping in after Fisher Rose and Kurt Dahle. Since then, they have produced nine studio albums, with their latest release being Continue as a Guest in 2023.
