So, let me get this straight. A Spar supermarket in Zug, Switzerland, is now accepting Bitcoin? Really? I mean, what’s next? Paying for your groceries with a smile and a handshake? 😏
They’ve rolled out Bitcoin payments via the Lightning Network. Lightning Network? Sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie. “Hey, can I pay with my Bitcoin?” “Sure, just scan this QR code and hope for the best!”
According to DFX Swiss, who announced this on LinkedIn—because where else would you announce something like this?—this store is one of the first in Switzerland to let you pay directly at checkout with Bitcoin. I can just imagine the cashier: “Oh, you want to pay with Bitcoin? Great! Just don’t ask me how it works!”
Switzerland, the land of chocolate and neutrality, is now the land of Bitcoin. Who knew? They’ve been crypto-friendly for a while, but now they’re really leaning into it. I mean, Lugano is accepting Bitcoin and Tether for municipal fees. Municipal fees! What’s next? Paying your taxes with Dogecoin? 🐶
There are over 1,000 stores in Switzerland accepting Bitcoin. That’s a lot of places to buy overpriced chocolate with your digital coins. 🍫
And Spar? They operate over 13,900 stores worldwide. That’s a lot of cashiers who are going to have to learn how to deal with Bitcoin payments. “Uh, sir, your total is 20 francs, but if you want to pay in Bitcoin, I’ll need a PhD in computer science.”
Spar in Zug: Where Paying with Bitcoin is as Easy as Scanning a QR Code
Friction points? Complicated user experience? Yeah, that’s what they say. But now, you can just scan a QR code and hope it works. It’s like playing the lottery, but instead of winning money, you just get to buy your groceries. 🎉
Rahim Taghizadegan, a university lecturer, says it’s super easy. Just scan the code, send some sats, and voilà! You’re a Bitcoin millionaire—at least until you buy that overpriced avocado. 🥑
“If enough people use it, it may be rolled out in the whole country.”
Oh, great! Just what we need—more places to spend our Bitcoin. I used Phoenix Wallet for the Lightning Network, but honestly, anything works. Just don’t ask me to explain it. 😅
Switzerland’s blockchain ecosystem is booming, surpassing $593 billion in valuation. That’s a lot of money! And 17 entities have unicorn status. Unicorns! I can’t even find my car keys half the time, and these guys are out here creating billion-dollar companies. 🦄
Mathias Ruch, the founder of CV VC, says it reflects vision and resilience. Vision? Resilience? I just want to buy my groceries without having to think about the future of currency! Can’t I just pay with cash and be done with it? 🙄
And let’s not forget about Ethereum and Cardano. They’re out there doing their thing while I’m just trying to figure out how to use this Bitcoin thing at the grocery store.
