Is Netflix’s iHostage Based on True Story? Know Facts in Netherlands Attack That Inspired Thriller Film

Netflix’s Dutch suspense series, iHostage, has held viewers spellbound with its tense narrative. This film is certain to keep you riveted throughout, from start to finish. The plot centers around a gunman who storms into an Amsterdam Apple store branch and holds everyone inside captive.

He isn’t a thief or crook; rather, he’s an individual seeking reparations for what he perceives as injustices committed against him. Remarkably, this narrative is based on actual occurrences that took place in February 2022. In the said month, a man donned a disguise and infiltrated an Apple store while brandishing two firearms.

The shop stood in a bustling Amsterdam city center square. Despite several individuals successfully exiting the shop, an assailant took a handful of people captive within it, among them was a man from Bulgaria.

According to Yahoo’s report, the perpetrator requested a ransom of approximately €200 million (or about £172 million) in cryptocurrency and stipulated that they would be allowed to depart the city after successfully and safely making their escape.

During a nerve-wracking duration, the assailant successfully held hostages. Yet, the swift and courageous act of the imprisoned Bulgarian was instrumental in bringing the ordeal to a close. As reported by The Guardian, Dutch authorities commended the heroic captive for his crucial part in the situation.

In just a brief moment, he managed to get away from the hostage crisis; had he not, the ordeal would have prolonged into a very difficult and uncomfortable night, the officer explained.

In this Netflix film, the story unfolds from multiple viewpoints – those of the hostage, the perpetrator, and the responding emergency personnel gathered outside the store. As the official summary states, “When a gunman takes over an Apple Store in Amsterdam’s bustling center, the police are confronted with a complex situation to defuse the crisis, all based on real-life events.

In the movie, Soufiane Moussouli portrays the character of the prisoner, whereas Eric Corton takes on the role of the aggressor. This motion picture has successfully established a distinct identity within the realm of true crime dramas.

iHostage is now streaming on Netflix.
