Camp Grizzly Second Edition: Unleashing Terror This Summer with Exclusive Insights!

This summer marks the launch of a significant revamp, not of a movie or TV series remake, but something much more expansive. We’re talking about Camp Grizzly, a game that has long been cherished by tabletop players, particularly those with an affinity for horror. For the uninitiated, Camp Grizzly is primarily a cooperative survival-horror board game where players assume roles as Camp Counselors. These unfortunate individuals find themselves pursued through a labyrinth of cabins and camp trails by ‘Otis’, a psychotic killer with an unusual fascination for bears.

Camp Grizzly draws inspiration from the classic horror films of the ’70s and ’80s, recreating those thrilling experiences on a game board in an engaging and narrative manner. Unfortunately, the initial release of Camp Grizzly was quite limited, causing many eager players to face high resale prices or struggle to find the game altogether.

Things are about to take a turn at Camp Grizzly as its original designer Jason Topolski and artist Austin Madison have teamed up with Trick or Treat Studios to create a second edition of the game via Kickstarter. This new version will be unveiled on July 8, and is set for retail release in 2026. The revised edition promises a polished, modernized, and more extensive take on the original game. We at TopMob are privileged to bring you an early peek at the prototype of the box, as well as previews of card designs that showcase the updated graphics for cabin cards, survival cards, and counselor cards. We’ve also spoken with key figures involved in Camp Grizzly’s second edition to provide you with all the details on what’s being updated, what remains the same, and any hidden gems to look out for in this refreshed gaming world.

3. Improved artwork replacing placeholder art in certain areas.
4. A double-sided game board featuring both the original map and a brand new one.
5. Rule updates that allow for flexibility, such as the choice to maintain the original ruleset or play with/without player elimination.

7. Exciting new stretch goals exclusively available during the Kickstarter campaign.

To clarify, Camp Grizzly stands out as a distinctive game, particularly appealing to those who enjoy the thrill of a “horror movie in a game” setting, whether they’re avid gamers or just casual enthusiasts. The rules of Camp Grizzly are easy to grasp, but what makes it special is its rich theme and the captivating story it unfolds each time you play. Furthermore, it offers an engaging experience that lets players delve deeply into their characters, which we find quite appealing.

According to original game designer Jason Topolski, one reason people are so captivated by the game is that it feels like creating a campy 70’s slasher movie together. During initial play tests, the survival horror theme attracted players, but it truly resonated when strangers collaborated as if scripting their own horror film. The experience could sometimes be chaotic and competitive, while other times, it fostered teamwork and selflessness to improve chances of survival. Regardless, laughter would ensue as players shared in the game’s absurd moments. Topolski also noted that many convention attendees returned to play repeatedly, forming attachments with their favorite characters.

Indeed, it reminds us of a familiar type of game, like Dungeons & Dragons. However, Camp Grizzly isn’t as intricate as a full-fledged D&D game. But for horror enthusiasts seeking a touch of narrative and world creation, it might be an excellent choice.

As a movie critic, I enthusiastically concur with Will Frank’s sentiments. The ideal spectator should approach this film with an open mind, eager to delve a tad deeper into their characters. It’s not about memorizing character sheets, but rather it’s a chance for casual role-playing that can lead to hilarious moments or create intriguing twists.

Topolski shares an unforgettable tale of a game played in Camp Grizzly, stating, “Around seven years ago at Comic Con, I had one of my most treasured gaming experiences with ‘Electric Steve.’ This story is still brought up today. My friend Evan was controlling Steve. Repeatedly, he would engage in mischief, earning a survival card each time. However, every time there was a fight, Steve would sneak away, causing more problems for everyone else. Eventually, Steve was captured and killed, but since Evan had ‘Unfinished Business,’ Steve came back as Ghost Steve. In the end, the players drew the climactic finale, ‘The Proposal.’ Coincidentally, Otis (randomly selected) proposed to Ghost Steve. To everyone’s surprise, Ghost Steve accepted Otis’ proposal. Together, they then murdered the other Counselors and lived contentedly ever after.

Indeed, we’re quite fond of Otis and Ghost Steve’s dynamic, and although we may not be able to reenact their unique journey personally, the charm of Camp Grizzly lies in the fact that its narrative has a way of intersecting with our own lives.

In the revised version, the play area in the story expands and becomes more inviting than ever before. Topolski mentions that the latest game board is exceptional, remarking, “Trick or Treat Studios has crafted an extraordinary new layout for Camp Grizzly that is stunning. I can’t help but wish the first version had looked as impressive.” As an added bonus, the game board functions as a two-for-one. The original board will have another map attached to its reverse side. Simply turn the board over for a fresh adventure!

As a passionate cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but wonder about the unique gaming experience that awaits us with the upcoming “Camp Grizzly” game. Graphic designer Jody Henning has shared some tantalizing insights, hinting at an evolved design. While it retains the original types of buildings, it will now revolve around a central building, not just a series of standalone cabins. This central structure will be a multi-room edifice, resembling the main gallery building in a camp, with other areas branching out from there. It’s shaping up to offer a more immersive and interconnected gameplay experience.

We’re really fascinated! However, it’s not just about novelty; it’s also about improving Camp Grizzly in a way that fans will cherish. In essence, our goal is to preserve the authenticity of the original game while giving it an update for the better. For instance, we’re working on making the cards more readable and ensuring the font size is appropriate, as well as correcting card formatting for a smoother user experience. This is a key focus in our current version development.

Frank explains, “The board now has additional details added to each area in the new design. If you compare it with the original dining hall layout, you’ll notice that it was quite simple, only showing basic tables and plates. However, when you look at the updated dining hall, you’ll see more detail, reflecting the same level of enhancement across all cabins. By dividing the single block on the original board into separate squares, we’ve made each space feel more distinct, and it’s not only aesthetically pleasing but also more functional when playing.

In summary, any modifications made to the original concept of Camp Grizzly aim to enhance its visual appeal, making it more lively and captivating, while also improving its functionality. These adjustments will provide users with a richer experience, offering increased nuance and detail as previously stated, alongside an abundance of polished artwork for their viewing pleasure.

Fundamentally, Camp Grizzly Second Edition caters to both novice and seasoned gamers. Frank explains, “We intended to make a few changes, yet keep the core game intact for those who prefer it and are familiar with its mechanics. For instance, ‘player elimination’ was a feature in the original version. It can lead to an ending where your character perishes, rendering you spectator for the remainder of the game, which isn’t enjoyable. However, some players argue that it was part of the original game and that’s how they want to play.

In a positive turn of events, Trick or Treat Studios devised a solution. As Frank clarifies, “We introduced new rules that are optional to eliminate player elimination, which occurs when your character dies and you lose all your items. The regular gameplay remains the same, but upon death, you transform into a new character. There’s no scarcity of fresh characters because we have numerous expansions. With so many counselors available, you’ll never exhaust your options for new characters. This way, you can continue playing instead of waiting for the game to conclude. However, for those who prefer sticking with player elimination, that choice remains open. I believe this change showcases our innovative approach to Camp Grizzly’s Second Edition.

Moving on, let’s revisit the enchanting allure of Camp Grizzly, a subject we’ve previously discussed and will touch upon again as we wrap up our comprehensive exploration. The charm lies in the opportunity to star in your very own horror flick. Topolski expresses this delightfully by saying, “I enjoy it when people narrate their games for me like they’ve just watched a movie.” So, what hidden gems might we uncover while playing? Well, with a title like Friday the 13th, you can bet there will be some nods to that classic horror franchise.

Additionally, Frank points out an interesting detail: “I revisited some vintage trailers for Friday the 13th, and one of them lists the victims as they’re being eliminated in the trailer, with a movie announcer saying ‘one’, then a large red flash appears for ‘two’, and so on, all the way to ’13’. If you observe the image of the board displaying the body count, it indeed goes up to ’13’ in big, bold red letters. This is a clear nod, particularly to the initial Friday the 13th film, and many elements seem to be a tribute, making it quite engaging.

In the spirit of ’80s horror classics, Camp Grizzly draws inspiration, yet introduces a touch of contemporary flair in its second version. Topolski grudgingly offers a tiny glimpse into the Easter egg collection of Camp Grizzly. “I adore the film Ready or Not, and I can assure you that fans will find a reference, but I won’t say anything more about it!

In addition to the entertaining Easter eggs in Camp Grizzly, Topolski mentions that he particularly enjoyed delving into old files and discovering discarded or very early content. As a bit of amusement, here’s an abandoned “Mad Magazine”-inspired concept we were tinkering with. This one was for the Barn Dance Finale. You can spot a nod to our beloved Becky game, where she pursued Otis around the board with a chainsaw, vanquishing him each time until she had an unfortunate roll and ran out of gas at the most inconvenient moment.

Furthermore, Frank mentions, “During our previous Kickstarter campaign, contributors had the option to pay and become a camp counselor character. These characters were particularly popular among some backers. I’m not certain yet if we’ll offer this option again for the upcoming campaign.

To summarize, Topolski argues that the game [Camp Grizzly] appeals to both hardcore board game enthusiasts, who are eagerly anticipating it as their grail game, and casual gamers. This is because the game is simple to learn and play, yet offers an engaging narrative and humor that emerges during gameplay. Even though the rules aren’t overly complicated, a more experienced player can help guide the group for an enjoyable experience. In essence, anyone can enjoy playing [Camp Grizzly] due to its accessibility and captivating storytelling elements.

On Tuesday, July 8th, Trick or Treat Studios will start a Kickstarter campaign for the second edition of “Camp Grizzly”. If you want to stay updated when the campaign goes live, simply provide your email address on this page: https://trickortreatstudios.com/pages/camp-grizzly-launch

At Camp Grizzly, players (1-6) assume the roles of summer camp counselors who are pursued through a labyrinthine network of cabins and trails by Otis, a lethal maniac with an unusual fascination for bears. The goal is to cooperate in order to discover a mix of objectives that can lead to one of four distinct game conclusions. Surviving the final showdown means victory!
