Previous Xbox titles like Hi-Fi Rush have seen some success using this approach.

As a die-hard fan of Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, I can’t hide my excitement about the recent leaks suggesting an upcoming remaster. However, the screenshots circulating online haven’t left me with the most positive feelings towards this anticipated release. These pictures were quickly spread online, along with screenshots of store pages that hinted at the comeback of a well-known Oblivion DLC across various editions. This revelation was a significant breakthrough and might have been the last proof skeptics needed to confirm this remaster is indeed in progress.

As a dedicated gamer, I stumbled upon some intriguing sneak peeks first on r/gamingleaksandrumours, later finding their way to platforms like Imgur. Mostly, these leaks showcase diverse game settings, but many have been noticeably darkened, making them almost unhelpful. However, a few of these images offer a tantalizing glimpse into the remarkable transformation the Oblivion remaster seems to be undergoing. To put it simply, from what I’ve seen so far, this might not just be a remaster, but rather a full-blown remake, visually speaking, as it appears to be several generations beyond the original game.

It Doesn’t Look As Vibrant

The circulating leaked photos highlight a side-by-side contrast between the initial version and the upgraded version, along with certain outdoor settings. Everything appears stunning, thanks to the rumored application of Unreal Engine 5 enhancing the game’s severely outdated graphics. Although these visuals are technologically advanced and cutting-edge,

the remastered version of Oblivion seems to lack the vibrancy and otherworldly charm that characterized the original game, a trait that distinguished it from its predecessor and successor.

Compared to Oblivion, Morrowind felt noticeably grimmer and less colorful, with browns and yellows dominating its almost alien landscapes. On the other hand, Skyrim’s use of a 2010s gunmetal gray palette made its snow-covered mountains and forests seem cold and unforgiving. In stark contrast, Oblivion offered a more fantastical and classically beautiful experience, embracing the high fantasy aesthetic that is one of the key attractions of the Elder Scrolls series.

Unfortunately, the remastered version doesn’t seem to have done justice to the visuals, as the screenshots resemble a muted version of Morrowind. Despite any differences in color palette or vibrancy across various regions within Cyrodiil, it’s clear that the Oblivion remaster will continue to impress visually. Some of the screenshots might have been captured at specific times of day, like dusk or dawn, which can give a more muted, brownish tone. Additionally, Virtuos might have intentionally toned down certain areas to add variety within Cyrodiil. However, there are also plenty of lush, verdant screenshots that evoke memories of enchanting fantasy landscapes.

Despite my excitement about the possible use of Unreal Engine 5 for the Oblivion remaster, I can’t shake off a concern that it might negatively impact the game. Although Unreal Engine 5 has been used in stylized games, its notorious performance issues and preference for photorealistic graphics could diminish the charm of the Oblivion universe.
