Netflix’s newest romantic-psychological thriller titled “The Gardener” has been making waves due to its suspenseful plot and well-developed characters. This Spanish series centers around Elmer, a tranquil individual who tends to his mother’s garden center, managed by La China Jurado, played by Cecilia Suárez.

However, there’s a deeper side to Elmer’s role than what appears on the surface. It transpires that China covertly manages a contract killing operation, with Elmer being the executioner for these assignments. Due to a harrowing event that affected his frontal lobe, Elmer has grown emotionally detached, enabling him to act ruthlessly without remorse.

A shift occurs when he’s tasked with eliminating Violeta (Catalina Sopelana), a cherished preschool instructor. However, Elmer can’t go through with the job. Instead, he develops affection for her and eventually falls in love. As emotions and business intertwine, more tension arises.

As the series draws to a close, it’s unveiled that Violeta wasn’t starting with a blank page. She drove Xoan to his demise and persisted in deceit throughout the investigation. It turns out that both Elmer and Violeta have been concealing heinous crimes of their own.

If Elmer doesn’t carry out his mother’s instruction to kill Violeta, she hires a different person to do it. However, Violeta manages to reverse the situation and kills the hired assassin instead, making him one more casualty on her list. She then shares this secret with Elmer, who assists her in concealing the body.

Later on, Elmer confronts his mother for the first time with genuine feelings – anger, sorrow, exasperation. In reaction, she assaults him and arranges for him to be hospitalized, hoping that a brain tumor surgery would return her the emotionless, compliant son whom she used to dominate.

After several weeks following the operation, Elmer recalls every detail – even the brutal assault by Violeta. He goes back to his tranquil existence as the compliant gardener, holding onto memories of Violeta. Later, she reappears in his life, but this time with a fresh demand for violence.

It appears that Violeta might have another person in mind as her next victim. Some speculate that she could be planning to eliminate Elmer’s mother in order to set Elmer free. However, this move seems quite straightforward, which contrasts with the unexpected plot developments that the show is recognized for.
