As a kid, I wasn’t always thrilled with the moniker my folks bestowed upon me, much like Billie Eilish. In a recent chat, she opened up about her early dislike for her name, which I can totally relate to!
In a chat with British Vogue, Eilish openly discussed various questions posed by fellow celebrities, including Idris Elba, who asked her about the origin of her stage name.
He inquired about her experience, “What was the first person with your same name you encountered and how did it affect you, were you proud of it or did you find it awkward?” She admitted that as a child, she strongly disliked her name.
The talented musician often encountered comments such as “I assumed Billie was a male name.” Reflecting on this, the singer revealed feeling irritated and stated, “What I longed for was a feminine name, something like Violet or Lavender, a name reminiscent of beautiful flowers.
However, the artist eventually grew fond of her nickname. She shared with the media that in the “cosmos,” no other name apart from Billie feels like her true name.
Eilish strongly prefers her name and considers it the ideal choice for her identity. Moreover, she shared that it seems just right and perfectly suited to who she is.
It’s said that the artist got her name from her grandfather, who was called William. She explained that, in a technical sense, the first ‘Billie’ she had knowledge of was her grandfather, although she never actually met him.
According to reports, the artist is said to have mentioned that the first Billie she encountered was Billie Piper, the star of Doctor Who. She admitted to being a fan of the show and feeling excited about it, yet simultaneously feeling envious and angry, exclaiming something along the lines of, “Why should anyone use my name for someone else? That’s just not right!
The artist can rightfully feel proud of her distinctive stage name, as it’s widely recognized for its significant impact in the music industry. Notably, she captured everyone’s focus when she unexpectedly took the stage at Coachella on April 12, during Charli XCX’s performance. They then performed their collaboration track “Guess,” as reported by People magazine.
