Doctor Who’s Viewership Hits Rock Bottom: Is This the End?

Once again, let’s offer another round of applause to Russell T Davies, as it has been officially confirmed that the recent launch of the new Doctor Who season on Saturday marked a record-low viewership for the series during its over 60 years on air.

After the first season from last year that recorded the lowest ratings ever for Doctor Who, Davies and Ncuti Gatwa have achieved a new record with their lowest viewership.

What are the ratings?

It turns out that just 2 million people in the UK tuned in to catch the first episode of Doctor Who’s second season last night.

Compared to the penultimate episode from last year, the previous record low, which garnered 2.02 million viewers, this episode saw even fewer viewers. In fact, with only 2.25 million viewers, last year’s season finale was also the least-watched final episode in the entire 60-year history of the show.

Doctor Who canceled? What about Season 3?

It’s been whispered around that the popular show, “Doctor Who,” might be put on hold or even discontinued after wrapping up its Season 2.

There are rumors circulating that Season 3 may not be produced, due to Ncuti Gatwa’s alleged desire to leave the show, and dissatisfaction from Disney (who reportedly invested $100 million) because viewership on Disney+ for Doctor Who is low.

It’s common knowledge that none of the “Doctor Who” episodes available on Disney+ were included in the Nielsen ratings, which are typically activated in your account automatically.

Recently, Davies suggested a significant break is imminent, and he appeared unconcerned about it. He shared this information during an interview on BBC’s Newsround.

I strongly believe that the character of the Doctor has become as legendary as Robin Hood. There may be moments when the storytelling pauses, but rest assured, in a few years, today’s Newsround viewers will grow up and begin creating new stories based on this legend. Good ideas don’t die; they live on, and I am a testament to that fact.

Fan reaction

The response from fans towards Doctor Who Season 2 mirrors that of the Chris Chibnall and Jodie Whittaker period, as well as the last season, and it has not been favorable.

At present, the initial episode of Season 2 on Rotten Tomatoes is rated with a fan score of just 45%. Interestingly, when you aggregate all the episodes from 2023, the total fan score drops to a mere 36%.
