Harry Potter Cast: HBO Adaptation Confirms John Lithgow For Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu For Snape, and More

HBO’s adaptation of Harry Potter has finalized their main cast choices, with John Lithgow taking on the role of the esteemed wizard professor, Dumbledore. Lithgow himself has disclosed this news to Variety.

As they got older in the stories, you discover more and more about Dumbledore, making him a far more intriguing, multi-layered character, according to his statement hinting at his interpretation of the character.

Michael Gambon took over the role of Dumbledore from Richard Harris in the later Harry Potter movie adaptations, while Lithgow mentioned that he enjoyed delving into the character and giving it his own unique interpretation.

In a casting change, Paapa Essiedu, renowned for his role in “I May Destroy You,” will take on the character of Professor Severus Snape, previously played by the esteemed Alan Rickman. Meanwhile, Janet McTeer has been announced as the new Professor McGonagall, replacing the original actress, Maggie Smith, in this adaptation.

Known for her roles in the Netflix show “Ozark” and critically acclaimed films like “Tumbleweeds” and “Albert Nobbs,” she has also earned an Oscar nomination. In the upcoming film, Harry’s friend Hagrid will be portrayed by Nick Frost, famously known for his role in “Shaun of the Dead.

Previously, the legendary character was brought to life by the deceased actor, Robbie Coltrane. However, in this new series adaptation, Luke Thallon steps into the shoes of Professor Quirinus Quirrell as he takes on the role of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. This part will be recurring throughout the show.

In conclusion, Paul Whitehouse from Harry & Paul will portray Argus Filch, another significant character in the series. Filch is the caretaker at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who lacks magical abilities, a type referred to as a squib.

Yet, it remains unconfirmed who will take on the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the upcoming production; these characters were previously played by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. Filling their shoes promises to be a challenging task for the newcomers!
