Renowned Latin American author Mario Vargas Llosa, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature and was a significant influence in 20th-century literature, has quietly departed at the age of 89.

As he took his last breath, the author was surrounded by loved ones who cherished him deeply. They were grateful for the remarkable journey he lived – filled with adventure – and for the literary masterpieces he left behind.

Alvaro Vargas Llosa, the author’s son, shared the news of his father’s passing on social media with a tribute post on Sunday. He expressed, “His departure will bring sorrow to his family, friends, and readers worldwide, but we find solace in knowing he lived a long, exciting, and productive life, and left behind an extensive collection of work that will endure beyond him.

Born in 1936 in Peru, Julio Llosa spent two years at a military academy starting from the age of 14, an experience that served as the foundation for his groundbreaking debut novel. He published “The Time of the Hero” in 1963. The book stirred up controversy in Peru, resulting in the public destruction of more than 1,000 copies and catapulting Llosa to literary fame. This work made him a leading voice in Peruvian literature.

Throughout his prolific career, Vargas Llosa penned over fifty works, encompassing novels, essays, and journalistic pieces, including The Green House, The Bad Girl, Letters to a Young Novelist, among others.

Several of Mario Vargas Llosa’s books have served as inspiration for films produced in Peru, Spain, and the United States. Among these movies based on his works are “Los Cachorros,” “Captain Pantoja and the Special Services,” “The City and the Dogs,” “The Feast of the Goat (film),” “Jaguar (1986 film),” and “Tune in Tomorrow.

1990’s romantic drama Tune in Tomorrow was adapted from the 1977 novel Aunt Julia and the Screenwriter by Mario Vargas Llosa, a book that drew inspiration from his own marriage to Julia Urquidi. The movie stars Keanu Reeves, Barbara Hershey, and Peter Falk.

In 2010, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature because of his detailed mapping of power structures and his vivid depictions of an individual’s resistance, rebellion, and submission, as stated on the official site.
