The five main actors from “The Breakfast Club” – Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy – gathered in person for the first time in nearly four decades at this weekend’s Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2). They reminisced about John Hughes’ 1985 film on stage. In the movie, Estevez played Andrew Clark, Hall was Brian Johnson, Nelson portrayed John Bender, Ringwald was Claire Standish, and Sheedy took on the role of Allison Reynolds.
For Emilio, this gathering held a very meaningful significance as he hadn’t attended any prior reunions. He expressed his eagerness to attend since the event took place in Chicago, the city where the movie was filmed, and it celebrated the film’s 40-year anniversary.
As a conscientious individual, I’ve chosen to miss every single high school reunion, but this time around, I felt compelled to attend – it was a personal decision I had to make.
Additionally, Emilio mentioned a past comment that Molly made, questioning if he might not care for the other actors in the cast. This remark left him feeling distressed. However, it’s important to clarify that he genuinely cares for each and every one of them, and this is what ultimately motivated him to attend the reunion.
Emilio shared, “I was told that Molly asked, ‘Does he truly dislike us?’ and that comment struck a chord with me. However, let me assure you, I adore each and every one of them.
Molly found the occasion incredibly touching since it marked the debut of all five cast members performing together for the very first time. She expressed her feelings by saying, “I’m truly touched that we’re all here together. It’s the first time Emilio has been with us,” and playfully mentioned that they no longer needed a cardboard stand-in for Emilio, as he was now present in the flesh.
At the panel guided by entertainment journalist Josh Horowitz, the cast gave fans an exclusive look at the making of the movie that left its mark on generations. They recounted tales from their time collaborating with iconic filmmaker John Hughes and fondly recalled the distinctive vibe on set.
At the panel discussion, Molly disclosed that neither she nor Anthony tried out for the movie. In a chat about the past, Anthony shared his experience by saying, “John simply gave me a call at home, and since I was still residing with my parents in New York, he said, ‘We’re making this film’, to which I replied, ‘That sounds great, let’s do it!’
Reflecting back on our time filming together, Ally shared that we developed a strong bond, making the entire process incredibly enjoyable. There was genuine care among us all, a feeling that clearly showed up in our performances too.
The coming-of-age comedy-drama movie, titled “Shot at Maine North High School in Des Plaines, Illinois,” followed the tale of five high school students belonging to distinct social spheres. On a single Saturday, these students found themselves in detention and ended up transformed. As each character’s story unfolded, the others gained new perspectives. When the day finally ended, they all realized that the school would never be the same again.
