In the style of the blockbuster “Minecraft” movie, if its initial domestic earnings of $200M are anything to go by, experts predict an even bigger second weekend, surpassing original expectations.
Warner Bros. also confirms a sequel is in early development.
Blows by $200M domestically
Last Thursday, “A Minecraft Movie” added another $7.1 million to its earnings, surpassing the $200 million milestone at the North American box office.
Second weekend estimates up
Initially, predictions suggested that the second weekend earnings would be approximately $65 million, representing a 60% decrease from the opening weekend. But due to an unexpected surge in fan enthusiasm seen on Friday, these initial estimates have since been adjusted upward.
It’s anticipated that the second weekend of the “Minecraft” movie will earn more than $80 million, representing approximately a 51% decrease from its initial earnings.
Compared to Super Mario and Barbie
The film has been likened to both “Super Mario” and “Barbie,” both blockbuster movies, but surprisingly, “A Minecraft Movie” surpassed those billion-dollar films in its opening weekend. Although it experienced a slight drop in viewership during the week, it’s still holding strong (see the box office figures below).
In its second weekend, Super Mario earned approximately $92.3 million, marking a decrease of 36.9%. Similarly, Barbie generated around $93 million, experiencing a decline of 42.6%.
Super Mario made $92.3M in its second week, which is 36.9% less than the first week. The same goes for Barbie, earning $93M and dropping by 42.6% compared to its opening weekend.
Could it be possible that a “Minecraft Film” might outshine expectations given the buzz on social media with all those wild reaction clips? It’s reached such levels that the police have been summoned, and theater staff are in tears over the cleanup (ha-ha).

Minecraft sequel
It’s also known Warner Bros is currently finalizing the deal for a Minecraft sequel.
Soon, the agreements for the Minecraft sequel aren’t quite finalized yet, but soon,” said WB co-chairman and CEO Mike De Luca in a recent Deadline interview, further stating, “They handled Minecraft exceptionally well, and we’re eagerly looking forward to working with this talented team.
Co-chairman/CEO Pam Abdy explained how they got the film off the ground:
In one of our initial discussions with producer Roy Lee, we discovered that the rights for Minecraft were close to expiring. He shared his insights about Minecraft, which sparked our interest. We delved into it, read up on it, and we found ourselves captivated by its potential. This resonated with what Jesse Ehrman and Legendary had been striving for all these years. And so, as producers, Mike and I, along with the rest of the team, embarked on the creation of the film. To echo Mike’s sentiments, we don’t sit idly in a tower approving projects; instead, we actively collaborate with our filmmakers and producers throughout every stage of production. The success of a film is not solely the accomplishment of one person; it’s a collective effort, and everyone deserves recognition when things go well or otherwise. It’s unfair to blame Mike and me for Joker 2 while failing to acknowledge our contribution to Minecraft as well.
