According to a death certificate obtained by People magazine, it was reported that Kilmer passed away from pneumonia. His cause of death is also attributed to acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, chronic respiratory failure, and squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue’s base.

He clarified a common misconception, stating, “There were rumors that I was in denial about my cancer. However, denial is an intriguing concept. I wasn’t denying that I had cancer in the past, but rather expressing that I no longer have it.

He confessed, “To tell the truth, accepting my initial diagnosis was extremely challenging. It felt unreal. I found it hard to accept that I was decaying, and I wasn’t prepared for the thought of dying.

Despite having a voice that could no longer be repaired, he continued to be involved in the film industry. He made a brief but heartfelt appearance in Top Gun: Maverick in 2021, reprising his role as Iceman. This emotional scene with lead actor Tom Cruise left him in tears.
