Black Power Ranger Claps Back at Criticism: ‘It Was a Milestone, Not a Mistake!’

Walter Emanuel Jones counters assertions that his portrayal as the African-American Power Ranger was an error.

In his recent interview on Investigation Discovery’s new docuseries, Hollywood Demons, Tony Oliver, who was the head writer of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, expressed regret over the castings for the show. Specifically, he mentioned that casting a Black actor (Jones) and an Asian actress (the late Thuy Trang) as the Black and Yellow Rangers, respectively, was a mistake in his opinion.

Jones addressed the feedback on his social platform, expressing that he found it truly an esteemed privilege to be involved in casting and portraying the Black Power Ranger.

Jones posted on Instagram, “It’s amazing to see so many media outlets talking about this… Yet, I’ve always preferred to focus on the good. While some may gravitate towards pointing out potential flaws, I believe in emphasizing the positive aspects. I acknowledge the desire to discuss perceived cultural insensitivity, but labeling it a ‘mistake’ would downplay its impact on countless individuals worldwide who found inspiration and representation through TV’s first Black superhero — transforming into none other than the Black Power Ranger!

Jones continued, “It wasn’t a mistake; it was a milestone. It was an honor.”

What’s next for Power Rangers?

Walther Emanuel Jones has made a comeback in the Netflix special titled “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always.” Furthermore, IMDb indicates that he will contribute to a fan film called “Black: A Power Rangers Fan Film” due for release in 2026.

Recently saw the news that a Power Rangers reboot is in works at Disney+.
