The renowned quartet, the Fantastic Four, are once again taking center stage, introducing a novel twist to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This time around, the legendary group – Reed Richards, Susan Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm – aren’t merely attempting to rescue the day; they’re striving to rejuvenate a series that’s been seeking its next major source of excitement. With a new film approaching, we’re getting a glimpse into how these timeless heroes intend to leave their indelible impression.
Imagine this scenario: A lab brimming with vibrant hues of red, yellow, and blue, teeming with extraordinary innovations and tense excitement. This is where we encounter Pedro Pascal, portraying Reed, the elastic-minded Mr. Fantastic, giving commands to cut the power as turmoil ensues. Meanwhile, Ebon Moss-Bachrach assumes the role of Ben Grimm (aka the Thing), fixed on a monitor, monitoring distress signals flaring up from every nook and cranny of the world. In this instant, even the most intelligent and resilient characters are searching for solutions—a scene that hints at formidable challenges to come.
In July 25, 2025, ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ will premiere in theaters, transporting us to an alternate 1960s-esque era. Unlike our familiar world with Neil Armstrong and lunar landings, this story features Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben embarking on a space journey, exposing them to cosmic radiation that transforms them into Marvel’s original family.
Matt Shakman, the director, explains to EW that it’s a combination of “Kirby meets Kubrick,” merging Jack Kirby’s comic book style with the sci-fi atmosphere of ‘2001: A Space Odyssey.’ This project offers a futuristic perspective from the 60s, filled with streamlined flying cars similar to the Fantasticar and a robotic companion named H.E.R.B.I.E., set against a funky ’60s backdrop.
In this film, we have a star-studded ensemble. Vanessa Kirby takes on Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman, delivering a heartfelt performance to her character who balances motherhood in the narrative. Joseph Quinn breathes life into Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, replacing the previous womanizer persona with a wittier and more amusing touch. Pascal plays Reed, the genius inventor, while Moss-Bachrach embodies Ben, bringing a gritty New York spirit to our screen, set against a Lower East Side backdrop reminiscent of Kirby’s own childhood neighborhood streets. Taken together, they are not merely a team – they are family, and that bond is the heart of this movie.
What’s captivating me is their innovative approach to rewriting the narrative. Unlike previous films that heavily featured Doctor Doom, Ralph Ineson portrays Galactus, the cosmic deity who consumes planets, in a striking purple-and-blue armor. This is a daring move, drawing from one of the most outlandish comic stories by Lee and Kirby, a stark contrast to the murky portrayal we saw in ‘Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.’ The production team has gone the extra mile by creating a genuinely imposing costume for Galactus, ensuring he looks larger than life.
The short promotional video subtly suggests a world in which Reed’s inventions and Sue’s peacekeeping efforts have created an almost flawless society—but this harmony is disrupted by Galactus’ arrival. It seems that the ‘everything is lost’ moment hinted at by Shakman is approaching, where the Fantastic Four encounter a threat greater than any they’ve previously faced.

Following three previous films that fell short of their potential conclusions, this latest one has a strong chance of delivering a satisfying ending, particularly given the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s exploration of the multiverse. Additionally, rumors suggest that the same team is set to confront Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ next year.
I’m eagerly anticipating their execution of this plan. The blend of vintage appeal, familial atmosphere, and interstellar conflict seems to be just the exciting twist that Marvel requires. I can hardly wait for July to arrive.
