Scarlett Johansson is set to make her directorial debut on a grand scale, with her initial film, Eleanor the Great, slated for premiere at one of the world’s largest movie platforms, the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. This groundbreaking project will be showcased in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section, renowned for presenting unique narratives. The news was exclusively reported by Variety.

In the movie, June Squibb plays Eleanor Morgenstein, an elderly woman hailing from Florida. She embarks on a journey to New York City and forms an unexpected friendship with a 19-year-old student. The storyline is filled with heartfelt moments, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Hecht, and Erin Kellyman lend their talents in secondary roles.

In early 2024, Johansson, known for her roles in Lost in Translation and the Avengers series, filmed a movie predominantly in New York City. Notable locations included Coney Island, Times Square, and other well-known landmarks. Filming concluded last April.

The screenplay was penned by Tory Kamen, and the stunning visuals were crafted by Hélène Louvart, who has previously collaborated on Never Rarely Sometimes Always. This production is a joint effort between Maven Screen Media and TriStar Pictures, with Sony Pictures Classics responsible for worldwide distribution.

For Johansson, this is a significant achievement as she’s spent most of her life acting since childhood. Now, she’s venturing into directing, adding her voice to the chorus of actors transitioning into filmmakers, and thereby influencing the evolution of cinematic art.
