White Lotus Season 3: Sam Nivola Discusses His Character’s ‘Traumatic Memory’ in Finale: ‘I Don’t Think Lochlan Grows…’

In simple terms, The third season of ‘The White Lotus‘ has concluded, with characters experiencing significant life lessons during their journey in Thailand. During the last episode, which premiered on April 6, actor Sam Nivola shared insights about his character Lochlan and how he ended up by the series’ end.

The actor asserted that Saxon eventually understood the importance of respecting women, but Lochlan never experienced such a realization. Regardless of multiple close calls with death, Nivola’s character failed to learn anything from these experiences.

During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter after the final episode aired on HBO, Nivola mentioned that his character Lochlan might be taking just another painful recollection from Thailand.

In the finale’s narrative summary, the actor stated, “Saxon undergoes a transformation; he understands the importance of treating women with more respect, which is commendable for him. However, I don’t believe Lochlan experiences such growth in this aspect.” He further noted, “I think Lochlan remains just as lost as he was initially.

Additionally, Nivola shared insights about his character’s harrowing near-death experience, explaining that a particular scene – where Lochlan emerges from the entangled body bag – resonates strongly with viewers and him personally, as he had to perform the underwater filming for this part.

In the given scene, Nivola explained that they filmed two different takes of the underwater segment. One version showed him struggling to reach the surface while swimming, and the other depicted him emerging from a watertight sack and subsequently drowning.

He commented, “Leaving the body bag was quite a stylish move, but I wondered if it might confuse the viewers. After all, did he die and then get thrown into the ocean? Spending the entire day filming felt incredibly surreal and strange, as I was unzipping myself from a body bag underwater.
