Actress Bella Ramsey, who plays the role of Ellie in HBO’s The Last of Us, hinted that viewers can expect a significant change in Ellie’s character and her bond with Joel when the series returns for its second season.
At Deadline’s Contenders TV event, Ramsey expressed, “For Season 2, I aimed to make her feel a bit heavier. I believe she became tougher, somewhat resembling Joel, yet she remains the same person with her unique humor.
Season 2 unfolds five years after the incidents of the initial season, with Ellie and Joel residing in the fortified town of Jackson, Wyoming now. The narrative continues from where ‘The Last of Us Part II’ video game ended, a scope that creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann confirmed is beyond what can be covered in a single season.
Ramsey indicated that the deception Joel had shared with Ellie at the end of Season 1 continues to have a profound impact on their relationship. In other words, there’s lingering uncertainty about that lie which Joel told her, and I believe it significantly influences the change in their bond.
It’s truly challenging to maintain distance with him, as it’s undeniably sorrowful. The situation seems destined to grow increasingly sad and detached, so prepare yourself for that.
In the short preview for the upcoming season, we catch a glimpse of Ellie saying to Joel, “You promised,” which suggests a growing rift and underlying tension in their relationship.
Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann discussed the difficulties of converting The Last of Us Part II into a screen adaptation, noting that the expansive narrative needed planning for several seasons due to its extensive scope and scale. Specifically, Druckmann mentioned that the first game could fit within one season, but Part II was too vast to be fully covered in a single run, necessitating thoughtful consideration of how the entire story would progress over time.
In addition, they verified that fresh characters would be introduced, such as Eugene, portrayed by Joe Pantoliano, a figure previously only referenced in the game, and Catherine O’Hara, who will now take on the role of Joel’s therapist within the cast.
As a devoted admirer, I can express that Druckmann himself appears content with the transformations brought about in the series. He likens it to a fresh interpretation of an enduring tale, preserving the fundamental essence. Intriguingly, he shares an eagerness to witness the audience’s response as they engage with this new take on the story.
Craig Mazin hinted that the series might require an additional one or two seasons to wrap up the story, explaining that the production was growing increasingly difficult as each episode expanded in size and intricacy. He also mentioned that they wanted to avoid keeping fans waiting for a long 17-episode finale that would take several years.
Starting in April 2025, Season 2 of the show is set to make its debut on both HBO and Max. Alongside Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, this upcoming season will introduce a larger cast, including Kaitlyn Dever portraying Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, and Young Mazino as Jesse, in addition to some new characters yet to be named.
